Data centre Data centre A data centre refers to a centralized repository, whether virtual or physical that is used for data storage, dissemination as well as management. In the data centre, information is usually organized around a particular subject. A data centre is normally used in housing computer systems which are utilized in data storage and transmission (Banks, 2005). This study focuses on a data centre in a fictitious company by the name Sharp Investigators Company. Due to the high level of data that the organization receives to its systems, it needs to develop a well integrated data centre from where information and communication flows.

It is worth noting that data and information that is transmitted across departments and from outside to the data centre is highly privileged and confidential as it regards high profile criminal and corporate investigations.Roles The main roles in the organization include documentation of data. This is often done by converting hard copy data to soft data, uploaded in the system. Scanning of information is also done and information uploaded in the system. Voice messages are also documented in the system as well as video clips.

This is documented as per the type of crime under investigation, making it easy for investigators to retrieved data from millions of files and video clips in the data centre. The second role involves maintenance of computers and other equipments. This prevents loss of information. The next role involves development of media controls where discs, printers, microphones and video displays are maintained in the right order on daily bases. Investigators can access real time data from the centre while still in the field (Kyriazoglou, 2010).

Operations controls In the organization I would ensure that operation controls are working effectively. The first controls that I would ensure that are working correctly is preventive controls. This would significantly reduce the level of errors in the organization. I would ensure that only members who are authorized to access privileged information has the passwords to such systems, and the system should be set in a manner that does not maintain password memory. I would also ensure that the system only accepts information in the predetermined media.

This will ensure that information such as video clips, sound evidence, scanned evidence and uploaded information are not mixed up (Kyriazoglou, J. (2010). Maintenance control would also be maintained in an effective way. I would ensure that information systems do not retain the easy to guess factory passwords and configuration. This will limit the opportunity for hackers to access such systems. I would also ensure tight control on the interdependence of individuals and the system. This would be done by providing investigators with unique pass key codes for each of the data centre sections.

This will ensure that no untrustworthy person will get into such areas and have unauthorized access to the system. The next control that I would ensure that it is working effectively is the privileged entity controls. This would only allow administrators to access administrative areas of the data centre and information, creating bases for accountability on any action in such areas or data. I would also put in place controls for resource protection. This would ensure that any flash disks or CD’s that are carried by investigators from the office to the field are recorded and checked.

They should also be recorded when such employees return them.
