MEDIA INDUSTRIES By of the of the of the School 10 September Give examples of how you engage with news in your life. This could be blogs, news websites, your Facebook page, a printed paper, or on TV at home. Why are multiple media important? There are numerous media platforms that can deliver timely news across the world in the contemporarily time. Majority of the people still employ the traditional means like radio, print newspaper and TV, especially when relaxing. However, digital social media (facebook, twitter and internet blogs) have taken news to another level and enhanced the platform where multiple people can engage. Conversation: Listening to Radio news break and posted news on the TV channels’ websites, people get informed of the events in their surrounding and around the world. It follows that questions are asked and debates are started over thrilling or sensitive issues addressed in news. Most of the listeners are enticed to share their opinion in the debate/ongoing conversation by either phone calls to the TV/Radio channel or post their viewpoints on the blogs/websites next issues been discussed. Checking updates: Since people are not always in their homes, online social networking has become a trending fashion. Using computer and smart phone gadgets readers/ viewers can enhance their engagement habit. It is common for people to keen checking for news updates either at time intervals for hourly or daily postings, which also give them an opportunity to comment or offer their feedback (Cameroon, 2011). Other fascinating behaviors: Most times you would witness those watching news with you mimic the voices from a news video clip, because it captured their attention or felt ridiculous. Children are good in such cases. Also laughing and getting emotional for sensitive news clip. Multiple media are necessary to ensure a broad range of geographical regions and people are kept well informed and have various options which they can actively use to engage with the news. This would help the society to participate making decisions and in solving problems in society by offering their opinions and feedbacks to tangible issues. How do such technologies as Netflix and (illegal?) downloads affect our social habits? Do you ever binge-watch or do you watch your preferred programs in a weekly manner? How do these different methods alter your experience of the program? Several years ago, people had still been using DVDs and video cassettes to watch movies and other recorded clips they desired. Netflix technology use of latest streaming model continue to attract millions of people to subscribe for the service, from which they can stream movies/shows in real time. Netfix technology facilitates production of contents and distribution, but also has a “mind-boggling access to consumer sentiment in real time” (Carr, 2013). Basically, people online can simply manage to download various movies, series, shows and other offered contents, without necessarily having to wait for their airing on cable TV channels. Most people would spend more time online, watching and downloading specific contents; this is addictive and they could end up spending most of their productive time in watching. Netflix provides its subscribers the opportunity to binge watch most of the released seasonal shows/series. Those who lack the luxury of time can go with the option of watching their preferred programs as aired in weekly manner. Weekly watching of programs is one way that fuels excitement and speculation to viewers of the drama/show. By the time an episode ends, where everyone is experiencing it simultaneously, there is a general but regulated anticipation on the next scenes. However binge watching creates a greater connection of the viewer with the story line and gets hooked up for the entire journey from beginning of the released season the end. It appears more like viewing the whole story from one scene setting and a proprietor of obsession to preferred streaming content. How does contemporary digital software enable users to become creators? For example, the Sony digital software is now an inspiration to many artists to further their music, video and audio production in the entertainment industry. Users’ creativity today ranges from video games, animation, and creation of digital libraries and albums of photos series of recorded events amongst. Take an example of graphic designers, digital software, some downloadable for free has enables most modern youths take new interest in design, establish businesses and enhance digital art (Stewart, 2014). What is meant by tolerance and vilification (p. 329)? How can we encourage the former and reduce the latter in social media? Tolerance and vilification: Media’s role of informing the society of the ongoing happenings and issues is said to have spurred other good and negative behaviors and attitudes in people. Contents and news broadcasted across the media channels could come from a specific society, whether the content is interesting or not. However, the ability to evoke positive attitude about the society being addressed in the situation depends on the reporter/anchor and how the image is projected. Tolerance in the media context is hence the ability to pay concern, reject stereotypical concepts that create social differences, while appreciating social cohesion and diversity. Tolerance is the act of expressing intolerance. It is often through distasteful statements, propaganda and discriminatory words intended to a specific people and can destroy tolerance within people with diverse differences. To promote tolerance in the social media, the best practical strategy is to regulate the limit of free expression. People need to be aware of what they comment, how it discriminates against another person and take responsibility of their words. With clear legislations, vilification on social media can be treated as a felony, which hence requires formulation of anti-vilification/discrimination to regulate social media misconduct (Holland, 2006). It is about taking a legal action in this modern times, but requires sufficient monitoring, evaluation and control and integrated efforts by all countries. References Cameroon, B., 2011.
