Standards Research Standards Research Introduction The rise of the internet has created demand for communication infrastructure. Thedevelopment of this infrastructure must be informed by the need to create an affordable and sustainable platform for communication. As a result, the role of standard setting bodies such as ANSI, IEEE and ISO is bound to increase. IEEE working group The IEEE has created working groups designed to address the different types of networks in the world. One of those active workgroups is the 802.20. The mobile Broadband wireless access has been created in response to the increasing use of mobile devices. There is an explosion in the number of people accessing the internet on their mobile devices. As a result, there is a need for protocols to ensure sufficient infrastructure to support their work. The working group is focused on the establishment of standards for mobile broadband access. The need for IEEE 802 standard The IEEE 802 standard is made up of a family of networking standards that range from the Ethernet to wireless systems (Beylot & Labiod, 2013). The standards cover all their physical specifications. The IEEE is divided into 22 unique parts. The importance of the standards in a digital era cannot be stated in an effective manner. As human beings connect computers to networks, it is clear that they need a set of rules that will determine how data will move through the different networks. Furthermore, the IEEE standards have bestowed immense benefits on the consumer. The benefits include interoperability. The term denotes ability of computer users to use the different networks at their disposal without undermining the flow of data packets. Secondly, the standards result in low product costs. The feature saves the user a lot of money that they would have otherwise spent buying items that fit all the different network needs. Thirdly, the standards are easy to manage. Protocols are needed to determine the movement of data across different networks. Computer users are lucky that their options are limited to a few effective standards (Kuo & Zhu, 2012). Evaluation of the three standards There are three common standards including ISO, ANSI and IEEE. The three standards play an important role in the information and communication sector. However, it is important to determine the standard with the most impact. The International Standards Organization is the largest and most effective developer of standards that have a global impact. In addition, it is responsible for publishing them. The importance of ISO lies in the fact that it makes it possible for the developers to create products that would address international market needs. In addition, it facilitates the manufacturing process by increasing the efficiency of each of the different stages that are involved in producing goods (Bidgoli, 2000). Furthermore, its role in the information and communication sector is very important. The creation of technology requires a formal recognition in order to have a widespread appeal in the international markets. The ISO plays a significant role here. The organization determines the adoption of terminology. Moreover, it determines if the new system is compatible with the existing infrastructure (Bidgoli, 2000). Receiving the approval of the ISO results is an approval. It is essential for marketing purposes in the international market. Although the International Standards Organization has the most impact, an evaluation of the other two bodies shows that they all play a significant role in the communication industry. The availability of affordable interfaces is the key to the growth of the LAN market. For the adoption of LAN technologies to be fiscally sound, the cost of connecting the equipment to a LAN must be significantly lower than the cost of acquiring the equipment (Held, 2003). Based on this requirement and the fact that the LAN logic is a very complicated process, there must be an effective solution based on the use of chips and the adoption of very-large-scale-integration. However, chip manufacturers would need to be sure of finding a high volume market before they commit themselves to producing the appropriate products. Creating the products involves a very expensive process. The observation can be attributed to the high cost of inputs that are needed. Consequently, there is a need for a LAN that would be widely accepted (Burbank, 2013). The move ensures demand for the products. As a result, it satisfies the volume requirement needed for manufacturers to feel the need for creating the appropriate products. In addition, the LAN would enable the products manufactured by different manufacturers to communicate. Consequently, the IEEE 802 committee serves a very important function in the communication industry. The American National Standards Institute is an umbrella organization that plays an important role in the communication sector and other sectors. The institution coordinates the creation of standards in order to prevent duplication among the different organizations that do the same. The organization itself does not participate in the process of setting standards nor does it perform that role (Ciccarelli & Faulkner, 2006). Instead, it provides a platform for the development of standards in a controlled and sustainable manner. An evaluation of its activities shows that it plays a significant role in the communication industry. For example, it ensures that all the bodies such as the IEEE follow due process in the creation of new standards. In addition, it advocates for a consensus-building approach in the process. The move is significant since the standards affect entire industries. As a result, it is important to ensure that all the stakeholders participate in the process. The participation of all the stakeholders ensures the development of a sense of ownership for the standards created. Consequently, the enforcement of the standards would be easier. In addition, it advocates for openness in the process (Held, 2003). Enhancing that such processes are open is integral towards ensuring that the process is conducted in an effective manner. The need for federal action in the communication industry The role of the federal government in the communication sector must be evaluated in a careful manner. The participation of the government in the sector has both advantages and disadvantages. For example, it will create standards that can be enforced. The government has the power to force players in an industry to adopt its standards. However, there are concerns that it could result in increased regulation of the communication sector. The qualities of the argument should inform public opinion on the matter as opposed to preconceived opinions. An evaluation of the merits of the argument shows that the industry would benefit from an increased federal regulation of the sector. Government involvement in creating standards for the sector would result in the creation of standards that everyone would be bound to obey. The move would advance the interests of the sector rather than undermine it. Furthermore, the creation of these standards such as NIST involves extensive consultations with industry stakeholders. The participation of industry stakeholders is important in ensuring that the establishment of the standards takes a global approach. In addition, the federal government has the incentives to make the international community to adopt the standards. For the domestic market, it could for example, promise better liability protection. Moreover, the participation of the government in an important industry such as the communication sector cannot ignored. An evaluation of NIST activities show that federal involvement in setting standards for the communication sector should be welcomed. The government is also a consumer of communication products. As a result, bodies such as NIST ensure that it adopts cost-effective communication programs. Conclusion It is evident that all the standard setting bodies are important. The growth of the communication industry relies on their ability to respond to increasing consumer needs and trends in the sector. In addition, it is clear that federal participation in this sector would be a force for enhancing growth and efficiency. References Beylot, A.-L., & Labiod, H. (2013).
