WIRELESS AND MOBILE TECHNOLOGIES Wireless communication is one of the biggest contributions to mankind by technology. Wireless technologies involve the information transmission across different places without using cables and other physical connectivity. In wireless communication technology, distance of transmission range from within meters to several kilometers. Some of the devices utilized for wireless technologies are mobiles, cordless telephones, wireless computer parts, GPS units, and satellite television. Mobile technologies refer to the technologies platforms that are created for and utilized on mobile devices. Basically, one can develop a mobile technology on mobile technology on a mobile device or on a computer to develop another mobile technology. For example, WAP is a mobile technology, and so are the mobile applications and SMS and mobile websites etc. These technologies are utilized by organizations in different ways so as to improve their efficiency. They are utilized by organizations so as to realize an unprecedented connectivity level between employees, customers, and/or vendors. Employees are able to download applications on their phones that enable them to connect via social media like Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn, or the organization may utilize web-site based applications so as to facilitate for direct communication with their customers in different ways. Real-time communication in very important in realizing business benefits, like improved customer service, efficient use of staff time, and a range of products and services delivered (Smyth, et al. 2004). Because of the interactive nature of these technologies, organizations are able to get urgent feedback on products and services from their customers through sharing of information through this medium.Rapid development and business research are some of the results of efficient wireless communication technology. Besides, it offers a competitive advantage to firms in their different industries hence increased productivity and quality of output. In this respect, consumer community is also made to have a feeling of having a direct role in the development of a company. Mobile technology introduced fresh ways of product promotion and advertisements. There are apps incorporated in the mobile phones which enhance people’s awareness on various goods and services and market trends which effectively offer companies platform to promote diverse brands. Besides, prospective customers are able to read the required information by the individual on his/her mobile phone and it automatically displays advertisements that are related to the same information. This customization has made marketing more effective, and since many potential customers normally have a phone handy, their access to advertisement is increased. Some of the wireless and mobile technologies implemented by delta include; in-flight Wi-Fi, baggage tracking and air-port check-in through Smartphone apps, and a 24-hour customers services through Twitter and direct ticket booking from Facebook. The application of these technologies by delta is very efficient. The application is efficient given the fact that delta has been able to provide its customers with tools of technology that keeps them connected at the time of the travel experience with the ground and air simultaneously. By providing the customers with tools for tracking their bags and/or checking their connecting flight status, it eliminates the travelling stress and puts them in control. The popular Fly Delta app has successfully provided eBoarding check in options in 79 cities across the world, possibility of tracking and pay for bags, updated travel information alerts, details of airport and aircrafts, and parking reminder. The implementation also made it possible for Facebook users to book for flight and/or check-in for the upcoming flights by just using a ‘tab’ without having to navigate to the company’s website. Innovative tools such as offered by Delta have significantly eased travel plans and related logistics for the consumers. Given the fact that delta continuously expands its social interactions with the customers and also offers a real-time travel help in both English and Spanish, is a clear indicator that the company has efficiently and effectively implemented the wireless technologies and mobile technologies. The high level efficiency of implementation of these technologies has enabled Delta to serve more than 160 million people very year, and was even named the airline that is most admired worldwide by Fortune magazine in its 2011 list of the Most Admired Companies airline in the world (Jones, G. 2003). The other company that I selected is Barclays Bank which is a British multinational banking and financial services company. It is a worldwide financial institution with significant presence in various economic spheres of several countries. Barclays annual operation reports indicate that it has the following business clusters; Wealth and Investment Management, Corporate and Investment Banking, and Retail and Business Banking. The bank utilizes wireless and technical technologies. Barclays bank has a mobile app referred to as ‘The Barclays Mobile Banking’ which enables its customers to access their Barclays bank accounts in the same fashion as Barclays banking website, but the app saves the customers some steps to get their details. The bank also offers public access to the internet over tablets and smart phones, in –branch Wi-Fi. The implementation efficiency of these technologies is very high. This is the reason because, for the mobile banking, it has made the banking process for its customers very easy. It is also secure, very easy to access and has many applications for smart phones. The most important of them all is the ability by the customers in controlling their money because you may not have an internet connection all the places but mobile connection is always there. The bank allows the customers to access their accounts through mobile browsers, texting or even downloadable applications. It is also good for alerts more so when your account is running low. By simply accessing your online account by your web browser which is a very convenient thing to the customers (Jenkins, T. 2005). The bank’s Wi-Fi is also highly efficient since it collaborated with BT Wi-Fi in a fast track project that launched the Barclays Free Wi-Fi in its branches. This improves the customers experience since the mobile phone users make good use of the waiting time. The customers utilize their Wi-Fi devices within the branches to schedule for appointments with the financial advisors or get to know the special programs. Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) systems identify customers through RFID-equipped cards of the bank that enables the employees to offer enhanced levels of services that are personalized (Ireland, et al. 2008). The Delta Company uses the wireless and mobile technologies more strategically as compared to Barclays bank. This is the case because in Delta, both the wireless and mobile technologies are geared towards making the company more efficient by increasing its pace in the ever increasing competitive world, the technology has made the company to be very efficient unlike for Barclays which still faces some challenges in realizing the optimum efficiency of the technologies it has implemented. For instance, the mobile banking is not as perfect as it could be; a lot of services are pretty basic. The customers utilize it just to check balances and monitoring of finances. It is not functional as the online banking, it basically offers things that can be performed daily like looking account’s activity and paying bills. The operational and enterprise system of Delta airlines outsourced from IBM. The company turned over the better of its back-office operations of computer to IBM. IBM is responsible of operation of the software and computers that support the customers’ reservations of Delta, flight management, business record-keeping, and maintenance tracking systems. For Barclays bank, it has engaged with BT Wi-Fi to support the company’s free Wi-Fi project in its branches. References Ireland, R. D., Hoskisson, R. E., & Hitt, M. A.
