? Artificial Intelligence (2001) Background The Artificial Intelligence is the American based science fiction movie which was released in the year 2001. A.I. is the modern day interesting and thought provoking fairy tale movie to watch by the people. The movie appeals towards the fans of sci-fi movies rather than mainstream viewers. The movie takes viewers on the time of future when there is a huge change in global climate. Climate change resulted in to the floods on the coastline of America and later various laws restricted the conservation of resources by humans (Ekbia, 2008). This resulted on the development of a robot which is named as David (Haley Joel Osment). The robot is highly developed that can feel love was adopted by Henry (Sam Robards) and his wife (Frances O’Connor). Henry and his wife have a son named Martin who is unwell and ill. But when Martin returns home, both Martin and David are jealous between each other. Henry’s wife, Monica sends David loose in the woods as Monica thinks that David may be a threat. David is truly determined to find Blue Fairy who can help David to turn to a real boy to get back love from Monica. The science fiction movie Artificial intelligence was directed, written, and also produced by Steven Spielberg. The idea behind the movie Artificial Intelligence was originated by Stanley Kubrick. Stanley entrusted Steven Spielberg the proposed project. But in the year 1999 suddenly Stanley Kubrick died. Then Kubrick’s wife persuaded Spielberg to complete the direction and artistic control of the film. Steven Spielberg is regarded as one of the best known and influential film personalities in the film industry. The movie A.I. is based on the short story by Brian Aldiss named as super –toys last all summer which was released in the year 1969. Other famous movies directed by Steven Spielberg are Jaws (1975), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Indiana Jones and the Last crude (1989), Jurassic park (1993), Schindler’s List (1993).All of the movies directed by Steven Spielberg would dazzle viewers all around the world due to wellspring of talent. All of the movies don’t have a common theme but every movie has something new and innovative and that what makes Steven Spielberg as one of the best known director in the history of film industry. Artificial Intelligence was released in the year 2001. Structure/ Form Artificial Intelligence A.I. is very much a visionary, complex, ad spellbinding film that helps to tutor everyone through the faculty of imagination and in the name of love. Maximum shot of the film was done in studio where the famous Flesh fair and Gondola sets were developed in the Long beach of the south Los Angeles and in the enormous Spruce Goose Dome. These sets were built in the year 1983. It was built to house famous Howard Hughes plane. Artificial Intelligence is cinematically wonderful to watch and tells emotional story about the robot child and quest for maternal love (Westfahl, 2005). The title of the movie perfectly blends with the movie. Normally Artificial Intelligence means a branch of computer science that develops advance software and machines. The whole movie is sci-fi and movie is about future machines like David which was created and can act normally as a kid. The title of the movie connects wonderfully with the theme of the movie. Artificial Intelligence movie was distributed by DreamWorks Pictures in international theatrical and Warner Bros. Pictures in USA theatrical. In the opening credits only movie name is presented. And movie name is presented in such a way that both words Artificial and Intelligence words are coming from sideways to join at a center of a screen to become A.I. It perfectly blends with the setting of the movie. The setting of the movie is futuristic. The film commences with a narrative after the catastrophic global warming that lead to flood which destroyed landscapes and thousands of population (Kowalski, 2008). The commencement of movie gives the view everything changed in the future of Earth. The film is structured in three different parts. In the first part David (Mecha kid) strives to take in and understand in a human family while the third part, viewers follow the adventure of David during the search. Finally, David confronts own dream. The one of the most important sequence is when David is bought home by Swinton (Sam Robards) who works for the Cybertronics Company. The entry of David was quite adorable. Another important scene is when Martin own son of Swinton and Monica was in a deep free for five years curing for a disease is well recovered from the disease and bought back home (Blackman, 2008). David gets a first look on Martin who is real son of Monica. The film’s most wrenching scene is when Monica abandons David to the forest. From this part viewers get to follow the adventure made my David to turn from robot kid to real kid. Artificial Intelligence film mainly used the patterns of circular and doubling designs. Stanley Kubrick had spent around two decade to develop this film but after Stanley’s death Steven Spielberg wrote and directed the movie. But is seems odds when two different directors with difference in temperament and style created a same movie. Throughout the film, different characters repeat same type of actions; faces of different characters are superimposed on topmost part of one another and even narrative of the film circles around on itself. There are many specific characters that are repeatedly reflected against the rounded surface and framed with the help of oval structures. This type of repetition of shot composition and choice that signifies underlying themes and various readings. It also includes interconnecting between machines and human that reaches over both destiny and desire. One example of facial doubling that used to continue throughout the movie is that when David looks and investigates the family photographs of Swinton and Monica and their real son Martin. The camera shows reflections of David in each photograph that are visually superimposed. Artificial Intelligence film used one of the main visual motifs which are doubling of faces. This is mainly because towards the main character which is David this pattern is specific. The specific scene that constitutes the film’s climax is when David submerged underwater in vessel. Most viewers believed that should have been ending of the film when David was trapped underwater in the Coney Island. David wises Blue Fairy and wises on and on, until the ocean freezes. Many believed this to be ending of the movie but movie goes on. Two thousand years passed by evolved mechas begun to gather evidence of human civilization from the frozen areas. Evolved mechas found David and gather David’s robotic memory and experiences. With the help of David’s basic programming, the highly advanced mechas which can also be said as aliens gets a glimpse of fundamental form of humanity and rudimentary form of humanity within the David’s love and desire towards the Monica. David awakes and then finds inside the Swinton home and sees projection of Blue Fairy. Then David finally received wish to become real boy and experience final affection moments with Monica. This scene revolves the central issue of the film which is David’s wish to become real boy and get love from Monica. Audiences would have expected movie to have ended much earlier. Bit in those last moments when David finally got the wish to become a real boy and be with Monica viewers must have been delighted. And thus identify the movie named as Artificial Intelligence in a way when David finally becomes real boy. Theme The film Artificial intelligence presents a clear point of view as it shows clear air of importance, and it can perceived as the greatest strength and it can also be responsible for drawbacks. Many areas of films are stretched as it can be found by many viewers to take some areas as seriously. Every theme of the movie perfectly blends with the movie. Journey of David to turn into a real boy that translates the progression of robot and the movie named Artificial Intelligence. Film would have been void if it was ended before. But happy ending of David meeting with Monica was truly appreciated by viewers. Some views may thing the theme of the movie stretched long enough. Steven Spielberg has taken the movie to helm the story which has been started for years before by late Stanley Kubrick. Artificial Intelligence greatest strength is it gets philosophical about the issue on robot or humans and it is wonderfully crafted by Steven Spielberg (McBride, 2010). Many viewers would think when David’s was trapped underwater at Coney Island is like pure fantasy in relation to the events which happened earlier. But the film’s ending describes A.I.’s fairy tale intensions to make a happy ending.
