Introduction

However, despite these established facts, several people still get into the habit because they find it satisfying and stress-relieving. The problem is in quitting the habit because of its addictive quality. As an initiative to encourage people to give up smoking, a campaign tagged ‘Stoptober’ has been launched in October 2012 in an attempt to urge UK’s 8 million smokers to quit or at least try to stop smoking for 28 days in October. This was the first ever mass quit attempt staged in the belief that if smokers can hold on to not having cigarettes for 28 days, they are most likely to successfully kick the habit and remain smoke-free. Galloway (2012) reports that of the 65% of smokers who say they want to quit, only 37% do so. Although smoking rates have already declined in the past decades, in recent years, such decline has slowed down. Smoking accounts for majority of premature deaths in England, with 100,000 deaths in UK caused by smoking-related illness. ...
