THE TRANSFORMATION MODEL OF COMMUNICATION IN CONTRAST TO TRANSMISSION MODEL INTRODUCTION This essay will explore both transmission model and transformative model of communication by first describing the related theoretical frameworks and then outlining the application of transformative process in various situations for achieving maximum benefits. This essay will clearly summarize the relevance of transformative approach and the need for organizations, individuals and governments for achieving specific results. COMMUNICATION Communication is a movement of conveying meaningful information. Communication required a sender, message, recipient and a receiver. Communication takes place when a sender encodes a message and sends it through the communication channel which can be affected by noise or some sort of interferences. When the intended recipient receives and decodes the message then the intended person may or may not provide feedback as a result. The communication process completes once the intended receiver is able to decode or understand the sender’s message (Littlejohn, 2008). TRANSMISSION MODEL OF COMMUNICATION The transmission model of communication is a model which is designed for reducing communication to a process of transmitting information. This approach is also known as informational approach to communication. This model was presented by Shannon and Weaver in 1949 which was discussed in detail by Chandler on one his text (Sudakshina). The transmission model consists of the following five elements: A source of Information which is able to produce a message A transmitting device which has the ability to encode the transferring message into signals and amplifies it for transmission The signal which will flow through the channel A channel on which signals will be adapted for signals transmission A Receiving device with the ability of reconstructing the signals into message A final destination where the message will arrive Any noise which interferes in the travelling message is a dysfunctional element which can either be internal or external. Internal noise arises from the receiver’s knowledge, attitudes and beliefs whereas external noise is which comes from other sources. These internal and external noises can strengthen the intended message or in other words can weaken the intended effect. The alternatives to the transmissive models of communication are transformational or constructive approaches. These perspectives are designed in order to construct a meaningful message by initiators and interpreters rather than just simply transmitting (Werner Joseph Severin, 2001). TRANSFORMATIONAL MODEL OF COMMUNICATION Transformative Communication is an approach which is a creative communication process in which people are challenged, empowered and inspired to change belief systems and behaviors. All these transformation are done for facing challenges, discover prospects and opportunities in a changing environment. Transformative Communication is used to support daily activities, peace, conflict resolution, empowerment, healing and more. (Swartz, 2008) Transformative Communication was developed by Marshall Rosenberg with the sole intention of creating peace trough speech and communication. This model is also known as Non-Violent Communication and is successfully been practiced in 37 countries which is tested in variety of environmental situations such as family, workplace, social service, education, mediation, government, prison etc (Renato Benigno Malay, 2006). The basic idea underlying Transformative Communication is that people or individuals want to establish a connection while communicating. But it is unfortunate that at time when we try to connect with words or behaviors it transforms into a communication collapse. Our language structures are defined by our culture which is responsible for communication success or failure (Swartz, 2008). Marshall Rosenberg in his Transformative Communication has outlined Four D’s which leads to communication failure: 1. Diagnosis which rely on Judgments, Analysis, Criticism & Comparison 2. Denial of assigned responsibilities 3. Demand 4. Deserve Oriented Language Structures APPLYING TRANSFORMATION MODEL TO BUSINESS & ORGANIZATION The transformational communication is the assurance to use communications as a prime aspect for organizing your business strategy. Transformational communication involves methods for sharpening creativity and strategic communication campaigns for strengthening our battle against racial and economic justice (Swartz, 2008). Whereas the Transmission Model has never been applied to human communication as its major goal was to determine how an information source can be mathematically described and ensured for proper information encoding. Transmission Model of Communication was never designed to influence or cause someone to take some action, it was only meant for transferring information in the form of signals from one end to the other (Werner Joseph Severin, 2001). Transformation Communication has the power and ability to strengthen leadership and supports combined and mutual development. For achieving peace and stability it is essential to have healing communicators or individuals who are fully trained in somatic and social justice, healing justice and above all strategic communications. These all qualities when combined appropriately will nurture a society, organizational culture, country and ultimately will spread across the world (Sudakshina). Effective communication makes an individual happier which in turn reduce the chances of verbal fights; allow managing anger and expressing feelings and emotions in a better way which will change critical situation into positive feelings.
