Miscommunication - Research Paper Example

Although this was not the norm, it happened to a large enough extent during my early childhood and adolescence to be a defining characteristic of my life as it related to living at home with my father. Although this brief analysis will point out specific instances in which the aforementioned factors have worked to provide situations in which miscommunication broke down and implied levels of meaning were unable to be successfully conveyed, it should be clearly understood by the reader that this is not meant to cast any type of aspersion onto the character of my father or exhibit any type of intellectual or developmental shortcoming that he may have experienced (Sweeney et al 2010). Rather, this man was the formative foundation for what I consider myself today and an intellectual in every sense of the word; he merely suffered from the fact that he came to a different country and a different culture later in his life and had difficulty acclimating to the new language structure and vocabulary as quickly as a younger person might have. One particular example I remember with a great deal of clarity was concentric around a compliment that my father was attempting to give to a woman he had met. My father was always attempting to strike up conversations with what most people would consider “strangers”. However, due to the fact that my father never met a “stranger” in his entire life, he actively sought to engage anyone and everyone in some type of conversation or verbal exchange. This was doubtless partly born out of his desire to attempt to integrate into Australian society in a more full and complete manner. The particular incident in question occurred when my father met a woman while he was waiting for a bus. The standard small talk proceeded with both of them stating what they did for a living and where they lived. My father, somewhat unbound by the constrictions of Australian etiquette, proceeded to question the woman as to whether she was married. Taken somewhat aback by what seemed an endless barrage of questions by a little known stranger on the street, the woman responded that she was not. At this juncture, my father reverted even more to his cultural understanding of life, love, and marriage and proceeded to tell the woman that there is no reason why she should not be married as she was attractive. Without allowing the woman to say so much as thank you for the compliment or stop him as the conversation was moving on to uncomfortable subject matter, my father said that if he were not already married himself, he would readily marry her. Although this was said with the purest intentions and meant to buoy the confidence of the woman/encourage her to seek out a mate and get married, the compliment was not taken this way with the woman as she was taken aback by such a forward advance and proceeded to immediately interject her voice into the conversation by alerting my father as to ...Show more
