Thatcherism A Conservative Ideology The ideology of Thatcherism is still evident at the core of the current party’s beliefs, function, organizations, values and leadership. Thatcherism refers to the social, economic, and political ideas that are associated with Margaret Thatcher leadership style. Thatcher was a British prime minister since 1979 to 19901. She was also a leader of the conservative party, which made her to leave a legacy behind and a long standing ideology which reflected and impacted the outlook of the conservative ideology.

She was assassinated in the year 1990. However, Thatcherism became a political project developed by the conservative leadership which was meant to re-establish the ideological, electoral, economic and political condition of the party. The free market economic policies are one of the features amended to change the structure of ownership in the community rising from the nationalization to the privatization2. The structure of the rewards is carried out through cutting the taxes and benefits of the rich people.

Lastly, subsidies are withdrawn from the industries to encourage stiff competition. The idea of Thatcherism also emphasizes on the responsibility, duty, discipline and authority3. Despite the critics, it has gone to an extent of emphasizing on the environment, poverty, unemployment, education, strong local governments and international development. This conservative party has gone a step ahead of accepting the multi-cultural face of the modern Britain. Thatcher government does not tackle the impending and serious issues of global warming, which stand up for big business4.

The main aim of the Thatcher was to restore political fortunes of the conservative parties. She used to believe that one should be responsible for their actions and the choice they make in the society. To conclude, Thatcherism plays a major role on the conservative party policy from 1980s to 1990, leaving a legacy difficult to forget.
