Case Study: Hollywood in India: Protecting Intellectual Property Movie plagiarism is a common phenomenon despite the term plagiarism being common in written literature. Movie plagiarism involves using other people’s intellectual property without their permission. Current developments in technology have contributed to an increase in movie plagiarism. This paper will focus on ways or method of protecting intellectual property by preventing movie plagiarism. The paper will also analyze the case study “Hollywood in India.

”Movie plagiarism is manifested in various forms. The first manifestation is the direct use of ideas from another different movie. The movie My Name Is Khan is a cross between the movie forest Gump and Rain Man (Iyer & Arora, 2010). On the other hand, the movie Partner is a Bollywood version of Hitch. The two cases indicate that movie plagiarism is rife within the film industry. Antipiracy laws are present in most countries however; movie piracy thrives despite these laws. Production companies should therefore, take various measures and initiatives to protect their intellectual property.

Production companies can release protected copies of each of their film in order to cub cases of movie plagiarism. Controlled casting through registered theaters can also greatly reduce cases of plagiarism within the film industry (Iyer, & Arora, 2010). Frequent comparison between movies at their early stages of development can assist producers to detect movie plagiarism at an early stage. This will protect the intellectual property of a company against any future cases of plagiarism. Comparison of different movies also enables production companies to identify different methods or forms of movie plagiarism.
