According to Jefferies and Brown (296), FLSA only allows employers to take a tip credit of a percentage of the minimum wage rate. The FLSA defines a tipped employee as any employee who regularly receives more than $20 in tips every month. Generally, tips are normally counted towards an employer’s obligation to pay minimum wage to the workers when their can result in a lower cash wage per hour for the straight time hours. However, the law stipulates that tips should never be used to reduce the amount of cash paid by the employer to below $ 2.

13 per hour (Jefferies and Brown 296). There are a number of requirements provided in the U.S. department of Labor for regulation of meal credits for employees. Some of the requirements include that the meal must be voluntarily accepted by the employees in lieu of the cash, employees must be informed of the actual amount of credit to be taken and finally, the employer must maintain relevant records. The maintenance requirements for uniforms under relevant federal and state laws include that the maintenance allowance for uniforms should not be used as a credit towards the federal minimum wage and employers who require but do not maintain employee uniforms must pay them for the cost of maintenance in addition to the minimum wage.

On the other hand, some of the applicable state law requirements include that a maintenance allowance for uniforms may or may not form part of the credit towards the state minimum wage (Jefferies and Brown 298). At subminimum wage rates, the restrictions on student employment under the federal law include: The employees must be full time students, they must not be employed for more than 8hrs a day or 20hrs a week when schools are in session, the maximum hours of work when schools are out of session must not exceed 40hrs a week and finally, full time students under16 years can only be employed
