Hovering on the page of CPJ’s Global Impunity index, it reveals that the top 10 countries where journalists are slain and the killers go free are the following (Witchel, 2014).1. Iraq – (Impunity Index Rating: 3.067 unsolved journalist murders per million inhabitants) 2. Somalia – (Impunity Index Rating: 2.549 unsolved journalist murders per million inhabitants)3. The Philippines – (Impunity Index Rating: 0.527 unsolved journalist murders per million inhabitants)4. Sri Lanka – (Impunity Index Rating: 0.

443 unsolved journalist murders per million inhabitants)5. Syria – (Impunity Index Rating: 0.313 unsolved journalist murders per million inhabitants)6. Afghanistan – (Impunity Index Rating: 0.168 unsolved journalist murders per million inhabitants)7. Mexico – (Impunity Index Rating: 0.132 unsolved journalist murders per million inhabitants)8. Colombia – (Impunity Index Rating: 0.126 unsolved journalist murders per million inhabitants)9. Pakistan – (Impunity Index Rating: 0.123 unsolved journalist murders per million inhabitants)10.

Russia – (Impunity Index Rating: 0.098 unsolved journalist murders per million inhabitants) In some countries, particularly those in the rank 7 and below, attempting to convict the murderers is a primary concern. However, from rank 1 to 6, no significant improvement in the hearing of the crimes is remarkable at present. Most of the killers in these countries remained free or unpunished and some even are far from trials. However, these countries with established democracies are pointing the unsolved journalist murders to the failure of elected governments to protect journalists (Lisosky & Henrichsen, 2011, p.111). The authorities are claiming that they are doing actions to resolve the senseless violence, but in countries where the impunity index rating is subjectively higher, attempting to close a case associated with journalist murders sounds like a punch to the moon, because of low level of press freedom (Committee to Protect Journalists, 2013).

Authorities may remain to have no substantial control in solving the crimes, and at some point may be overpowered by the perpetrators at some point.ReferencesCommittee to Protect Journalists (2013) Attacks on the Press: Journalism on the World’s Front Lines. Hoboken, NJ: John Wiley & Sons.Lisosky, J. M., & Henrichsen, J. R. (2011) War on Words: Who Should Protect Journalists? Santa Barbara, CA: ABC-CLIO. Witchel, E. (2014) CPJ’s 2014 Global Impunity Index spotlights countries where journalists are slain and the killer go free.
