s, law enforcement officers should have knowledge in crime mapping, use of GIS and cartography in order to understand the trends in crime in their jurisdictions (Dent, 1999). A GIS utilizes computer-based tools that enable the law enforcement officers to modify, analyze and query geographic and tabular data on crime statistics in certain geographical area while crime-mapping techniques will assist the law enforcement officers to collect and analyze data and produce geographical maps that illustrate the crime trends in the area (Dent, 1999).

This paper will help in understanding why cartography is essential for law enforcement community and why their knowledge on the subject must be increased. One of the minor disadvantages of the increased ability to experiment with mapping is that only few GIS provide any rules for map composition, and growth of GIS in to a non-geographical discipline thus implying that only few users will attain cartographic training. The starting point in increasing cartographic knowledge amongst law enforcement community is teaching cartographic literature such as knowledge of geography and geographical features in various law enforcement jurisdictions (Dent, 1999).

Law enforcement community must understand the traits that are available in certain geographic areas such as roads, landmasses and railway lines that will affect the mapping on the geographic area. Law enforcement community should have basic knowledge on geodesy, statistical mapping and graphing that is essential in attaining graphic design skills that assist in crime mapping (Chainey & Ratcliffe, 2006). The officers should be able to use graphic scales in interpretation of maps and charts especially distance from main geographical features such as tall buildings, roads and ports.

Increasing the knowledge of cartography amongst law enforcement community will require the officers to learn data collection methods in order to be capable of obtaining both qualitative and quantitative
