Use of violence is one of the most important elements of the stories Boys And Girls (Whitt 176) and A Good Man Is Hard To Find. Laird and his father use the same violence for animals in the former that The Misfit and his gang do for humans in the latter. An in-depth analysis of both the stories suggests that all that Laird and his father and the Misfit and his gang did was to get the skins off their victims. Laird’s father made use of no part of the fox’s bodies but their furs. “…the whole pelting operation… [included] the killing, skinning, and preparation of the furs” (Munro).

Likewise, when the Misfit and his gang killed the grandmother’s family members, all they brought back from the woods was a yellow shirt that had bright blue parrots imprinted on it. This is a strange coincidence that both the groups find interest in the clothes, though both seem to have different reasons for this. Laird’s father sells the furs for earning bread while the Misfit kills the family for no good reason. While buttoning the shirt as he put it on his body, he says, “I found out the crime don’t matter.

You can do one thing or you can do another, kill a man or take a tire off his car…” (O’Connor 20). . her frequently refers to Christ while pleading the Misfit and his gang, and she also says to him that he is just like her own son in these words, “Why you're one of my babies. You're one of my own children!” (O’Connor 22). Motherhood has been referred to as the highest calling in human society (Capturing Today). On the other hand, being an animal old Flora does not have oratory power to address a human, yet she is active and agile with strong legs.

So all she can do to save her life is try to break free of the hold of her owners. Therefore, she runs away as fast and as far as she can. Both Munro and O’Connor suggest that as an individual sees more violence, his/her heart is not shaken at its display. The narrator of the story Boys and Girls expresses her indifference for violence in these words, “I did not have any great feelings of horror and opposition [as] I was too used to seeing the death of animals as a necessity by which we lived” (Munro).

The very indifference reflects in the mannerism of the Misfit and his gang when they are begged for mercy by the grandmother. The steadiness of determination of the killers is another important aspect related to the murder of the grandmother and the old Flora that both Boys And Girls and A Good Man Is Hard To Find share. Laird and his father finally shot Flora despite all her protest and running away from the stable. Laird said, “We shot old Flora, and cut her up in fifty pieces” (Munro).

This essentially tells how professional and emotionless they are in killing the animals. The same lack of emotions reflects both in the Misfit’s retort to the grandmother in which he refutes and makes fun of her religious beliefs and finally, when he shoots her dead. After killing the grandmother, the Misfit says to Hiram
