The Figure a Poem Makes by Robert Frost The essay explains the generally the significance of poems based on the artistic impression on the readers. "It begins in delight and ends in wisdom" (1)-this is the second sentence of the essay that highlights the main idea of this essay. Frost wants to suggest that at first glance a poem might be a source of 'delight' but through analyzing and decoding its symbols, it can turn into 'wisdom'. The author uses a comparison to explain the changeable state of a poem. It can be like 'love' that changes in time :"no one can really hold that the ecstasy should be static".(2) The second paragraph of the essay insists on the process of elaborating a poem. It can start instantly like a spark in the writer mind, just a 'surprise of remembering something'(3), then the initial thought 'keeps growing' and develops through the author's linguistic skills. The third paragraph refers to the difference of work information sources between scholars and artists. The first ones 'works is based on 'projected lines of logic '( 4). The poets' sources of inspiration come out of books, in other words it's a kind of 'wild free way' (5) of expression based on subjectivity. The last paragraph insists on the freedom of form and the advice for reading the poem carefully in order to reveal new meanings and to convey the hidden figurative language expressions. The final statement of it stands for the basic idea: freedom of expression, reading many times a poem in order to explore and enjoy its meaning and 'freshness': "Like a piece of ice on a hot stove the poem must ride on its own meltingRead it hundred times: it will forever keep its freshness as a metal keeps its fragrance" (6) Fire and Ice by Robert Frost This poem is an example of Frost's symbolic poetry in his trial to introduce to the reader the subtle literary parables. In spite of its length (only a nine line poem), the poetic message comes through very precise statements. The main idea of the poem is that of apocalypse that can come either through 'fire' or 'ice'. This poetic message seems to be expressed through a prophetic voice: " Some say the world will end in fire, some say in ice".(7) The poet demonstrates his art of choosing powerful metaphors to express the destructive force of fire and ice. In parallel ,regarding to humans, the poem suggests the opposition between 'desire' ,'love' on a side and 'hate', on the other side. So, in other words just as 'fire' and 'ice' are opposite , so are 'desire', 'lust' in comparison with coldness feeling or lack of caring. The beauty of the poem is revealed through the technique of opposites and the words that build up a kind of balance of contrasts. We can notice the middle verse:" But if I had to perish twice"(8) as a line of symmetry between contrasts. There are nine lines and this builds up a type of balance, equilibrating the opposites. The poem demonstrates us Frost's talent of turning ordinary simple words into poetical jewelry. A Passing Glimpse by Robert Frost A nice and delicate free verse poem demonstrating again Frost's talent of " working within form, shaping it by his choice of language.and rendering in wordsthe sensory perception".(9) It's another short poem with a vivid setting and a nice integration of 'form' and 'content' in order to create the poetical effect. The main idea is that of inspiration sources for the poet suggested just by the title' A Passing Glimpse': they might spark in his mind instantly like 'a glimpse' from 'passing cars'. Then the desire of 'getting out of the train' to observe exactly different types of flowers and the details can be considered a poetic pretext for choosing the suitable words and rhymes. Towards the end the poem reveals another meaning through the verse:" Heaven gives its glimpses only to those/Not in position to look to close" (10)-this might explain that we are called to hazard ourselves to God's glory.
