Jack Butler's Jujitsu for Christ The action of the book Jujitsu for Christ took place in Mississippi in 1960s, and the of the novel gave a clear notion of that time. The book uncovers such important events as civil rights movement and relations between races. These issues are underlined both individually - in the main characters and their actions description - and in general, while narrating different complicated situations and problems which the protagonists had to resolve. The main character of the book, Roger Wing, lived in Mississippi, and his neighbours were blacks who suffered from racial injustice.

At first Roger Wing wasn't interesting in social injustice: he was white, and it played large role in the United States in 1960s. But later Roger became friendly to its neighbours, and he began to sympathize to his friends, especially after he was befriended by an African American family, the Gandys. As his awareness increases the book became more serious, and its tone shows readers tragedy of the plot. Roger Wing studied jujitsu in his high school, and he became acquainted with Patsy Wingo - mainly thanks to her Roger became fond of Southern Baptist Christianity.

There are many important social themes uncovered by the author on the pages of the book. The author affirms such important social values as tolerance, love, patience and self-esteem. The characters of Jack Butler's Jujitsu for Christ are rather contradictory and interesting, and their interactions between each other allows a reader to sympathize some of them (Roger Wing, the Gandys) and attentively follow the plot development. The protagonists of the book are unique persons, and their feelings, desires, ideas and actions can be familiar to the readers who have a notion of Southern society style of life in 1960s.

Roger Wing decided to open a martial-arts studio in a black section of Jackson, Mississippi, and witnessed for Jesus. This event influenced his life, and the readers of the book see his inner transformation and changes took place with him. Jack Butler portrayed human characters of the novel very specifically, and we, as readers, see that individual and typical features of the characters are mixed, and the characters become real for us. The main protagonist of Jack Butler's Jujitsu for Christ, Roger Wing, showed challengeable emotional and intellectual growth of his character that is displayed in his adventures in Mississippi, his relations with the Gandys and Patsy Wingo and tragic events facing the characters of the book.

Butler in his book unfolds also such important themes as the role of religion in our society, fathers and sons, the problem of history, and many others. Such important character traits of the main protagonist of the book, Roger Wing, as maturity and wisdom are also seen on the pages of the book. Race relations, civil rights, religious zealotry, martial arts, sex, fear and violence are blended in the plot of Jack Butler's Jujitsu for Christ, and the experimental manner of the author is clearly visible for the readers.

In addition to that, Jack Butler showed beautiful nature pictures. The novel begins with the words "A place called Jackson, Mississippi" - it makes readers intrigued and attentively followed the plot of the book.
