of the of the Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet is perhaps the most famous romantic play ever written in English literature. The play focuses on the love story of two lovers who eventually die in the end. The play is vibrant with different themes but the most important theme is that of love. Love is seen in all the relationships in the story. In the beginning it is the immature infatuation of Romeo with Rosaline which does not end successfully. Then it is the superficial love of Paris with Juliet who wishes to marry her not because he loved her but because she seemed to be an appropriate person for him as a wife.

In Romeo and Juliet, love appears to be above all emotions and relationships. The families of Romeo and Juliet had long inborn enmities between them. Despite these differences, love bonded the two strongly. According to the customs of that time, the social and family values are alive and both the characters respect their parents. However as the play proceeds the characters go against the norms of the society and defy their families for the sake of love (Shakespeare). The element of love and sacrifice is also clearly visible in the relationships between Juliet and her nurse as well as that of Romeo with Mercutio and Benvolio.

In the end, Romeo and Juliet, blindly in love with each other turn to death to preserve their love. The play has portrayed love as such a strong emotion that knows no norms or boundaries and acts as a unifying force among different characters (Sharma). Works Cited Shakespeare, William.
