Running head: HOW I GOT INTERESTED IN PHYSICAL TRAINING How I Got Interested in Physical Training Educational HOW I GOT INTERESTED IN PHYSICAL TRAINING 2How I Got Interested in Physical Training Nowadays between the various media and organizations, as well as pharmacies and doctors’ offices, it is virtually impossible not to know that going for a 30-minute walk once a week or a weekly bowling night with the fellows accomplishes next to nothing for one’s physical fitness and general health.

Going for a bicycle ride a couple of times a month is not enough either. I knew that I was not in good physical condition, which was really brought home to me when I signed up for a Terry Fox run. I signed up for the 5 km run; and since it can be done at one’s own speed, I felt quite comfortable undertaking this activity. After about two kms, I was becoming quite out of breath; and by four kms into the race, my chest pains resulted in my dropping out of the race. The next day I went to see my doctor and found out that my cholesterol, blood pressure, and heart rate were higher than they should be.

A subsequent stress test in a cardiologist’s office confirmed that I was operating at an unacceptable level. I was told what I already knew; namely, that periodic exercising was not enough, that I needed to have a regular exercise regime, ideally, one tailored made for me. The next day I was at the YMCA! The YMCA looked at my referral sheet, did a few tests, and then laid out a program, which I was to carry out five days a week. In the company of others, this was actually fun and something to which I looked forward.

I did well and soon received additional and more challenging exercises. I found that the swimming pool looked inviting; and being a swimmer, I soon was a regular at the pool and have participated in several swimming competitions. I still bowl weekly with the guys and ride my bicycle at least once a week. My cholesterol level, blood pressure, and heart rate are better than those of most men my age. Furthermore, all those endorphins I receive from my physical activities make me feel great emotionally as well!
