The writer was trying to say that in the olden days, men feared God and really wanted to stick to him. But with the passage of time, the belief also got changed and the man began to regard sin as the preliminary steps of doing right. The practice of committing sins in the belief that one day these mistakes and sins will take the wrongdoer to the right is an unwise concept. Committing sins repeatedly is like a small fire. If we leave it unchecked, it can turn into a blazing inferno that destroys everything in its path.

The only way to be safe is never allowed that fire to burn freely. Sometimes the biggest sins we commit start out extremely small. A person may think that he will just go along for the ride and he is not going to do anything further. Then he may end up being part of some criminal activity with his friends or colleagues. He may think he can well handle the result or he can quit when he wishes. And then he gets into a situation too deep, unable to quit even though down deep he wants to. Moreover, the temptation is another fire.

And if you are up to play with it even after realizing it, you are going to burn yourself with it. In fact, no deliberate attempts are being made from the part of the modern men to keep away the worldly temptations and the testing of the evil. Compared to missionaries of the medieval period we are more vulnerable to such temptations. In other words, we tend to find goodness in evil and never lend our eyes and ears to goodness. Thus we glorify the evil instead of goodness. In fact, throughout the ‘Inferno’, Virgil suffers no pain from Purgatory as he is a spirit.

However, Virgil is the person who sketches a plan for Dante to cross dangerous rivers and walls and to face other difficult life situations. As a result of the thoughtful acts of Virgil, Dante is safe from all these troubles. Virgil often warns Dante that the flaws of their journey were predetermined by Heaven.
