Dramatic irony manifestDramatic irony is a situation in which the audience is conscious of the current or future happening or situation that a character is not aware. It is the difference between what something appears to be and the veracity. In the stories “The Blind Man,” as well as “Story of an Hour,” several instances of dramatic irony manifest themselves.Story of an hour is a short story filled with irony. First, Mrs. Mallard receives the news of her husband’s death with utmost grief and makes her sister Josephine and her husband’s friend, Richard believes she is grieved.

She walks to her room, locks herself in, and starts rejoicing the death. Josephine goes to her room to comfort her and she pretends to be mourning while we know that she was celebrating the supposed death (Chopin web). It is irony when Richard decides to rush to his friends home to ensure that no one broke the sad news to Louise, his friends’ wife carelessly. On the contrary, the news is a relief to Louise as much as she still pretends to be saddened. Irony manifests itself when Mrs. Mallard claims she loved her husband and yet she celebrates the erroneous death.

It is ironic that a fire occurs at Brently’s workplace and kills several people. The news of his supposed death gets to his family while he himself is not even aware of the fire tragedy (Chopin web).In the story “Blind Man,” it is dramatic irony when Isabel avows all the time stability and contentment in their marriage while we recognize they have been experiencing a lot of disgruntlement in their marriage. They pretend to be happy such that even Bertie does not realize the unhappiness between them (Lawrence Web).

At the end of the story, Maurice supposes that they have resolved their conflict with Bertie. On the contrary, Bertie still holds a lot of resentment towards Maurice, which is evident from his discomfited look when Laurence proclaims their friendship. It also ironic that Bertie only perceives the physical blindness of Maurice and feels it could be the source of his unhappiness. Bertie is blind not to see his own state of unhappiness. It also ironic when Maurice tries to be intimate with Bertie while we are aware he cannot tolerate any intimacy and even feels offended by Maurice touch (Lawrence Web).
