Imagination in Drama and Poetry - Assignment Example

In the case of drama, one thinks that it is better appreciated to watch than read.  Drama sometimes contains metrical verses such as those by Shakespeare, that seem so unreal to today’s readers.  People cannot relate to the way the lines are written because it is very different from how people communicate at present.  Again, some verses in drama need to be analyzed further to be truly appreciated.  Imagination is very important in both drama and poetry and if one lacks this faculty, then it would be a real challenge to appreciate both forms of literature.

            Seeing a live performance will make one more interested in a play.  The lighting, set design, backdrop, and movements on the stage all contribute to making a performance effective and liked by its audience.  When one reads a play, one uses much of his imagination regarding the scenery and the characters.  On the other hand, when one watches a play, everything is already provided for.  One sees the setting and how the characters look.  The conversations between the characters become more meaningful because of their actions and tone of voice.  The experience becomes more real for the audience because it is as if they are part of the story.  The manner the characters deliver their lines strengthens the message they want to convey.  In watching a play, the audience must be attentive not only to the exchange of dialogues among the actors but they should also take note of the non-verbal actions of the characters.  The facial expressions, gestures, and body language of the actors are significant in understanding the characters of a play.  The audience must also take notice of the stage setting, the background music, sound effects, and the manipulation of the lights which all contribute to the beauty of a play (Marble, 1914).
