College: The story draws various religious aspects from the ancient new England culture and thus a knowledge of new Englands cultural aspects necessitates understanding of the story. Just like the England society, the story emphasizes on the need for righteousness and a consecrated life in front of God (Hawthorne, 1835). At the beginning of the story, Goodman is described as a family man and that is why he found it difficult to leave his wife behind and embark on his journey. However, he was compelled to leave and join his fellow worshippers in a congregation in the wilderness.

The stranger with the twisted staff is a traveler to the same destination and the importance of their resemblance is because they shared in faith in the importance of attending the congregation. Their resemblance comes in handy because the two agreed to walk together through the woods even though they were strangers to each other. In addition, both men were good willed, for instance, the traveler gave Goody Cloyse his staff to enable her reach to the congregation in time. Deacon Gookin, Goody Cloyse and the minister raised goodman’s faith and spirit to soldier on and get to the congregation in time.

Deacon cooking represented the church while Goody and ministers represented his support staff. Faiths pink ribbons are an indication of the fragility of her heart to Goodman and how her tender love thrills his heart. On hearing the truth in the church, Goodman was afraid of a miserable future and wished that he could die with his generations.The conviction of sin in the attending congregation, regardless of whether they are considered holy or wicked indicated to Goodman that every human being can sin and deserves to seek forgiveness from the most high (Hawthorne, 1835).

Toward the end of the story, Goodman is brought out as an old man contrary to the beginning where he was young and had only been married for three months. In addition, he is afraid of his sinful life contrary to the beginning where he is brought out as righteous having been brought up in a Christian family.
