The Crucible: A Script SETTING: In the middle of the forest, midnight. As the curtain rises, we see Tituba tending a clay pot with boiling water. Abigail, Betty, Mary Warren, Mercy and the other girls enter from different directions. The other girls walk towards Tituba, but Betty stays behind, obviously assigned as the watcher.Tituba: What have you for Tituba? Abigail: We have brought what you asked. Please make us a charm. Tituba: Cha! Hay ‘em near. We begin now. (begins chanting as she takes the live animal offerings from the girls).

Tituba: Tell Tituba what charms you wantin’. I started bubbling a pot so we can boar tru now. All-a-wanna take up my chune, make up a fete!(Tituba resumes her chants, and begins dancing. First she starts stamping her feet, as if to create a rhythm and then she starts raising her hand as if speaking to someone in the sky).Mercy: Make him see me in his sleep so he will come to me without my calling.Mary Warren: Make him love me!Abigail: (whispers) I want a charm to kill John Proctor’s wife!

Tituba: Oh lordie! A chune for Abby’s chossel!(Tituba’s chants become louder and the girls are taken with the rhythm she has made).Mercy: I am ready for you my love! (She takes off her clothes as she dances all around the fire. Mary Warren is dancing, singing, running all over, as if in a trance. )Tituba: Abby, are you ready to pay the price? Blood for blood. (Tituba cuts the head off a live chicken and catches the blood in a cup.)Abigail: I shall! For freedom of my love! (Abigail runs towards Tituba, takes the cup and drinks the chicken blood, as if thirsty.

Abigail then joins the others, dancing and laughing, obviously exhilarated. Tituba’s chants and the girls are now running wild, dancing round and round the fire.”Betty: Abigail! (Abigail and the other girls look at Betty and see alarm in her eyes. They have become aware of movement in the distant. They realize it is Mr. Parris and they begin shouting and running away.)Abigail: Betty, feint! (Betty starts shouting and starts acting as if she was truly very afraid. Mr. Parris arrives, but before he could take stock of the happenings in the forest, he sees Betty and is very concerned for the babbling child.)Abigail: You scared her Uncle!

(Curtain closes)
