However, the way he walks is like he is in his late fifty’s, he looks ever tired. He walks like an old person whose backbone cannot support him anymore. Duncan, does not like speaking, this is not because he does not have anything to say but because he is shy. In addition, he does not want to sound stupid and therefore prefers to keep quiet. The character traits of Duncan makes this movie different from other coming to age movies. His mother, Pam on the contrary is out going and likes to have fun so much so that she forgets to give her son time.

Pam, can be described a “bad” mother who only cares for herself and forgets about the rest of the family. Trent, her mother’s boyfriend is also an outgoing person who likes to intimidate others, his personality is different from what is expected of a father. He continually makes Duncan feel out of place and very stupid. Steph, on the hand is just like her father, she is out going, “witchy”, and nothing can stand on her way to having fun. She is the one who gives Duncan some confidence and courage to stand up for himself.

“The way, way back” movie is very educative for teenagers who feel out of place and do not know how to cope up with the challenges of life. The movie is told from Duncan point of view, this makes it even more interesting in that, Duncan is a teenager, who like any other teenager needs guidance and counselling. However, on the contrary, everyone ignores him, he ends up lonely and feels out of place. Despite, being seen as an out place of place teenager who looks very stupid, he goes out and starts to look at life differently.

He finally starts to have fun and at the end he becomes happy. If the movie was to be told from a different point of view then may be, it would not have been so exciting, for example assuming it was told from, Duncan’s mother (Pam) point of view then it could have been so different. Pam could have been seen so
