Task Dating and Content of the Three Rites Canon The Han and the Tang came up with three canonized texts about their superiority. These texts include the ceremonial rites (termed as the Yili), the Zhou rites (termed as Zhou), and the rites records (termed as the Liji). These rites played an important role in the social well-being of the society. They also related closely to two major traditional canon rites. These two traditional canon rites are Elder Dai’s Rites records, and Music classics or music records (termed as the Yueji).

However, these rites do not link to a single approach, style or author. They relate to various legends within their history such as Liu bang and the Duke of Zhou. The Yili ceremonial rites took the center stage with a detailed review of seventeen chapters. These chapters contained idealized, prescriptions of various liturgies. The Shi followed these rites through their major celebrations like district banquets, marriages, and mourning of the dead. The Yili further divides into eight major sections, with the first three touching on personal lives of the communities.

The first section outlined the ceremonial capping of a young boy while at puberty stage. The second section recounts the steps that two young individuals intending to join their lives together for a lifetime have to follow. As such, it recounts the various steps that ensue during the process of betrothal and culmination into a marriage, especially for officers with an ordinary rank. On the other hand, the third section prescribed the standard procedure for ordinary officers to follow when undertaking friendly visits amongst themselves.

Some of the parameters stipulated in the section are the modes of speech, the modes of contact, the modes of offering presents, as well as, the polite signals to retire. In conclusion, these three rites canons stipulated the manner of performance and execution of duties during specific occasions.
