The essay "Characters Comparison of Hester Prynne and Offred" presents the comparison of two women characters from novels "The Scarlet Letter" and "The Handmaid Tale".
Hester Prynne is Nathaniel Hawthorne’s protagonist character in his “The Scarlet Letter” romance novel. The novel is written with a background of Puritan New England in the Seventeenth Century. Hester, a young woman, married Roger Chillingworth, who happened to have been an elderly scholar of those ages. Roger sent her wife Hester to America to live there, and he never followed to live with her.
After a long wait of her husband who would not show up, Hester ended up having an extra-marital affair with Dimmesdale, a Puritan Minister, and they conceived Pearl. She was convicted of adultery since there was the birth of Pearl, and her husband was away. Her punishment was being forced to wear a scarlet letter “A” every day on her belly for her remaining lifetime to represent an adultery.
Offred, a protagonist in this story, happens to be the narrator of the Novel, “The Handmaid Tale." The whole story is narrated from her viewpoint and experiences. Events unfurl before the reader as vividly as Offred remembers them. She narrates the story as events take place, and lets us peek into her mind through digressions, asides, and flashbacks. Offred is kind, intelligent, and perceptive. She has faults that highlight her as human and just enough not to make her seem unsympathetic. She has a weird sense of humor, a graveyard wit. ...
