Unstoppable by Ralph Nader Introduction Ralph Nader’s book Unstoppable is about the 50 years that he spent fighting for the Americans against the deep influence of the corporations and their governmental advocates in the society. In his book, he leads the stance on behalf of the Americans and gives a persuasive account that Americans are not powerless. In his book he also represents his theory of liberals and conservatives to be able to work together. Nader is a famous political activist who is fighting for the alliance of libertarians, progressives, and conservatives against the corrupt Washington establishment. He covers the battle between the Left and Right where he stands on the Left and tries to build a bridge to being a common ground between the Left and Right. He wants to create opportunities for cooperation against the converging government tyranny. This book stands as a persuasive and convincing book written by the man considered as one of the hundred most influential figures in the history of American politics. The book holds several strong points which are the positive aspects. The most positive aspect is that Nader has used some of his own experiences to reveal the victories of progressive and conservative forces united and how these victories have otherwise been unknown. He worked with the organizations in Washington and draws a closer picture to the observations on the basis of which he breaks a new ground for the coalitions that can help in overcoming obstacles that cause their division and how the power of these groups can be expanded to the courts and the public opinion. The negative aspects of the book are some of the controversial issues that Nader has pointed out. The issues with the right-left alliance in Nader’s book can be divided into three categories. The first category is the centrist agenda. This idea presented by Nader is not controversial but it is criticized for being impossible to achieve in practice. Nader has given the theory about his idea surrounding many of the issues but he hasn’t described its practical approach. The second category is the right on agenda. This is controversial as it includes the adjustment of the minimum wage to inflation automatically. This part also lacks some arguments that Nader could make such as the automatic adjustment of minimum wage would deprive the democrats of the political stick that they have currently been using to beat Republicans. The third controversial view presented in the book as a negative aspect is the idea of breaking up the too big to fail banks (Nader, 2014). The main argument of the paper was to bring the liberalists and conservatives together and Nader has served that purpose very well. He has presented the views of the Right and of the Left and discussed the points where they can agree and work together against the government tyranny. The issues discussed include several economic and political issues that are shaping the American politics. He challenges the government on many issues, supports the liberals and conservatives, and also covers the aspects of the Southern Agrarians. Thus, the book overall covers all the aspects necessary to support Nader’s argument and convince the readers on the stance that liberals and conservatives should work together. The book mostly covers a contemporary view. With links offered from the past and previous events, the main arguments remains on the basis of the contemporary position of the liberals, progressives, and conservatives in America and on the basis of the current government issues. The book remains authentic and relatable because of the major aspect that it covers all the current issues in the American system. He includes small portions of historical references as they seem important but not long detailed stories of the past which would rather make the book boring and lengthy. With the combination of current issues, situations, needs, and the future predictions and recommendations based on the contemporary view and his own experiences, Nader brings a persuading conclusion to his book. Since the book is based on his own experiences and analysis, and he is from the left side, the book can at times be biased with his views. Even though the book holds great credibility and Nader tends to explain all his points thoroughly to convince the reader, some part of the book seems to be dependent on his personal views. Thus, another thing that shouldn’t have been a part of the book is the whole chapter about the Southern Agrarians and their populist movement in the 1930s (Nader, 2014). This part of the book seemed extended and an unnecessary detailed historic movement discussion that was only relevant on the basis of their successful way of maintaining rural economies. The book goes deep into the American politics and contributes greatly to the enhancement of knowledge. The book clearly describes the current situation and goes deep into the topic covering all aspects. The book tends to make us think that Americans can finally reclaim their rights to safe food, healthy environment, rewards for fair and efficient work, regain control of taxpayer assets, make bureaucrats accountable and efficient, and strengthen the investor rights. He speaks on behalf of the citizens and persuades them through his book for their rights. If these issues remain unchecked, they will override the constitution and bury the fundamental rights of the American citizens (Nader, 2014). Thus, I would certainly recommend this book to others as it covers a discussion topic that is much needed to be discussed and talked about in the current system. This book not only gives an overview of the American political system, but also presents a contemporary view of the issues that surround the people’s lives and the stances of the corrupt government. Even if a reader does not get convinced by Nader’s views at the end of the book, he will surely be showered with knowledge and ideas that were otherwise hidden. Many aspects of the book are surprising and it is overall appealing to read about the experiences that Nader had.
