Essay, Literature The poetry genre Definition Poetry is the type of genre characterized by the use of concentrated expression of ideas, feelings and imagery using intense and imaginative words to communicate a message. Poetry as genre demands the use of carefully chosen words that are selected to express meaning, sound and rhythm. By using poetry someone is able to produce thoughtful and emotional responses. Poetry as a genre can be used to teach young and makes the explore emotions, feelings, new thought, information and enlightenment. The use of poetry as a genre avoids using paragraphs but concentrates on using arranged lines, shapes, columns in order to create a rhythm that is understandable. The use of poetry is effective when words are chosen carefully and arranged for the purpose of creating imagery and sound so that feelings are captured and a voice is given to the feelings. Literary Elements Sounds: they are may be in the form of a rhyme, onomatopoeia, alteration and repetition Rhythm: It has meaningful words arranged precisely to produce a rhythm. Rhythm is a structure of poetry which involves the use of regular accented and unaccented syllables. Rhythm is made possible by alternating the unstressed pattern of words and stressed pattern of words. It is an important structure that produces musical elements in poetry Sensory images: These are used accompanied by descriptive words and personification to make poetry interesting and meaningful. Figurative language: Poetry is also effective when there is a use of figurative language such as metaphors and similes. Rhyme: It involves the repetition of sounds in poetry in order to stress meaning. Poetry Forms Narrative poetry-It uses rhyme and rhythm to tell a story so that the story becomes easy to remember. Lyric poetry-It is the form of poetry in which there is an expression of personal emotions and feelings characteristically using the spoken word in the first person with musical accompaniment. Limerick-This is the type of poetry in which one in five lines anapestic meters accompanied with strict rhyme scheme that is mostly obscene with an intent that is humorous. Haiku- These are poetry forms which date back from the 19 century in Japan to present. They are poems structured to look at the physical world and see something deeper such as the very nature of existence Concrete-This kind of poetry uses a typographical arrangement of words that are important in conveying the anticipated effect just like the conventional elements of a poem such as rhyme, rhythm and meaning of words. Free verse-This is an open type of poetry which does not frequently use consistent rhyme, meter patterns or any other musical pattern characteristic of poems. These awards are important in fostering competition among the authors of poetry hence leading to more quality books being released. Cautions for Teachers on Ways to Use Poetry Books in the Classroom When using Poetry Books in the classroom teachers are cautioned against using one Poetry unit and studying poetry in isolation but integrate the poetry throughout the teaching sessions. This will make the use of the Poetry Books a natural part of the classroom throughout the year. Additionally, teachers should not make it a must for students to keep a notebook for each Poetry Books unless the student wants to keep it. Teachers are also advised not to limit teaching only one form of poetry but a mixture of different forms when teaching so that students get exposed to the different forms.
