Essay on Humor David Sedaris and Dave Barry use humor in the two essays. The two essays are similar in the use of hyperbole. Exaggeration helps the authors effectively instill humor and entice the readers in the essays. In “Me Talk Pretty One Day” by Sedaris, humor in the form of hyperbole is distinct. The author says, ‘Her rabbity mouth huffed for breath, as if the suitable comeback remained stitched someplace within the zipper of her slacks” (Sedaris 59). In reality, the character does not possess a mouth resembling the one for rabbits and is capable of speaking.

In another instance, Sedaris describes a character named Anna as having teeth the size of tombstones. The author succeeded in using hyperbole to add humor to the essay, make his point, and lighten the mood of the essay.In the essay Lost in the Kitchen, Dave Burry like Sedaris applies humor to explain that men are not good in the kitchen compared to women. However, he avoids being offensive to both genders when explaining his point. Barry resembles the idea of men making dinner to trying to find a permanent cure for heart disease.

Hyperbole is present in the line “Men are basically scum when it comes to helping out in the kitchen.” Use of the word scum is relatively strong for use in a situation that describes human beings. He also states that a majority of men behave in the kitchen as ill-prepared Labrador Retrievers (Barry 1). With these statements, Barry makes the essay funny and captivating to the readers. Barry’s reliance on humor assists him make clear his points, which is true. In their use of humor, Sedaris mainly criticizes the ironic situations people find themselves.
