Graded Assignment Analyze Poetry Answer the following questions in complete sentences, and be sure to cite specific examples from the poems in this unit whenever possible.(10 points)1. Figurative language is an important tool for poets. Choose three examples of figurative language from the works in this unit and explain each one’s meaning within its work.Answer: Robert Burns in “A Red, Red Rose” compares the emotion of love to that of a newly bloomed rose in spring time when nature is at its peak.

In “Sonnet 55”, Shakespeare likens the durability of his love to that of “gilded monuments” which seemed to have tested and stood tall through time.In “She Walks in Beauty”, Lord Byron relates the female’s loveliness to that of the sky on a clear night when there are no clouds to blemish it and one can see the stars shining brightly, lighting up the heavens.(10 points)2. Compare and contrast Sonnet 55 by William Shakespeare with Sonnet 43 by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Be sure to focus on each work’s structure and each writer’s use of poetic elements, as well as the language, imagery, and themes of both works.

Include specific examples from the texts of both poems to prove your points.Answer: Both the sonnets by Shakespeare and Browning show the speaker declaring the intensity of their love to their beloved, stating that it would last over time till the end of eternity. Considering that love is the central theme in the two sonnets, it is pleasantly surprising how both are similar and yet quite different. She brings forward imagery of things which light up the world such as “sun and candlelight”.

However, Shakespeare describes his love to surpass all destruction. When reading them together, one of the things which stand out is the use of “you” in Shakespeare’s work in contrast with “thee” in Browning’s. (10 points)3. Reread Sonnet 30 by William Shakespeare. How does the speaker behave and feel in the poem before he thinks of his “dear friend”? How does the thought of his “dear friend” change his attitude? Why is the shift that occurs in the speaker’s thoughts viewed as a tribute to his “dear friend”?

Cite specific examples from the text in your response.Answer: The speaker reminisces about the past which makes him feel sad. He thinks about the time when he had so much and what he had now lost. He realizes that he has gained much in return too, but he cannot help but miss all that that was and all that could have been. He comes off as being regretful and sorrowful. It is not until he thinks of his “dear friend” that his “losses are restored”. He feels much better. It is implied that although he thinks he has not done much in his life, he is proud of this one friendship.

His friend made his life worth living.
