Extract of sample "American Literature before the Civil War"

This made him less doubt his fate and he fainted on the deck. When he was carried on board, he was directly handled and mixed up to see if he was complete by some of the crew and was persuaded that he got into a world of evil feelings and that he was going to be killed. Comparison with the experience of Phillis WheatleysPhillis was born in Senegal and like Olaudah Equiano was sold to slavery. While in slavery, Phillis also had the experience of adopting a name that she was given by her master.

Olaudah Equiano was not taught to be a servant but did it through the intelligence that he had and learned English. The same experience was with Phillis (Perkins and George, 135). Phillis also through the intelligence she had received lessons in English, theology, Greek and Latin. After some years of slavery, Phillis enjoyed limited restriction and became part of the family for her master. This is similar to the experience of Olaudah Equiano after ten years when he was able to buy freedom from slavery. The experiences that both Phillis and Olaudah Equiano had led them to write books and poetry. Phillis published her work when at the age of 12.
