Brief Background of the Study It is a universal truth that adults have mastered communicative competence in their native tongue. This holds true even to students of a second language, notwithstanding the fact that it is a foreign or secondary language in their native lands.
Through globalization, learners from different parts of the globe come together to be taught by teachers, the latter who also belong to multiple cultural backgrounds. It, therefore, becomes challenging to create a curriculum that will facilitate the provision of quality education for each learner, regardless of his/her linguistic and cultural background.

The proposed study will collect data from semi-structured interviews with male students in the language preparatory year programme in a college in Saudi Arabia. Using adult learning theories, the results of the interviews will be analysed by reference to secondary data collected in a narrative review of literature. Directions for further research will be identified and implications for practice will be discussed in the proposed study.
