In such a world, the common agenda in development circles is the concern to make the world a better place to live in. The developing world presents a topical issue in the subject of economics considering the disparities evidenced in such countries. The objective of entirely all governments in such countries is to completely leave behind the developing bandwagon and ride with the developed countries. However, amid such concerted efforts, challenges abound. Several issues account for the stagnation of most economies in the developing world. In most cases, corruption, improper policies, inappropriate resources, and such other limiting factors account for this existing disparity. Most developing countries depend on the agricultural sector as the backbone of their economies. The mode of agriculture in most of these countries is normally traditional with little mechanization in certain instances. In light of such emerging situations, the need to analyze the economic development and its repercussions on the agricultural sector rightly emerges. Economic development is the foundation of progress and prosperity that characterizes the developed world. It is characterized by improvements in the social welfare of the masses coupled with notable improvements in social infrastructure (Hayami 90-8). Economic growth on the other hand is characterized by increase in the productivity of a nation in terms of the national output. It is therefore imperative to realize that economic development can only exist after proper economic growth. This growth creates the resources to improve the standards of living of the people and enhances the general welfare of the masses. In most developing countries, it is a common occurrence to hear about great advances in economic growth but unfortunately, it is never accompanied by economic development. This creates the cause of concern and the need to introduce positive reforms in some of the developing countries. It is indeed true that most developing countries crave about development and aspire to attain the development standards evidenced in the West and in other Eastern countries (Debraj 78). Such development is however hampered by several limiting factors that should always be addressed. Considering Kuznets’s view on developing countries, economic development should never be the priority of such countries. Well, that is a point to mull over. Kuznets is mostly concerned about the effect of such development on the agricultural sectors considering that most developing countries are majorly agriculture-based. It is possible to imagine Kuznets’s opinions as misguided in a way. Agriculture plays an integral role in the world economy and its importance should therefore be emphasized. However, it important to delve into certain cases in this analysis. The United States is a major developed country but has greatly made great advances in the agricultural sector. This is mostly facilitated by the application of better methods of agriculture and the total mechanization of the process (Sanford 34-7). Several developed countries have successfully managed to feed their populations despite the little agricultural activities practiced in those countries. In a way, it boils down to priorities and focus. Economic development is surely important in the modern age. It will certainly help to rectify the worrying trends evidenced across most developing countries. In some countries, the life expectancy has reduced to unbelievable 40 years and even lesser (Page 58). Healthcare and education systems in such countries are even more debased. In such a case, the importance of economic development cannot be overemphasized. The assumption that an attainment of economic devel ...Show more
