Letter to the Editor The Wall Street Journal 1211 Avenue of the Americas New York, NY 10036 Dear Sir: Re: “Recipients of Jobless Benefits Down Sharply” (December 24, 2014)I am writing in response to an article published on The Wall Street Journal titled, “Recipients of Jobless Benefits Down Sharply”. I wish to include my perspective on the matter.According to the article, the number of lay-offs in the labor market has been declining (Morath and House, n.pag.). In addition, the government has cut back a benefits program which it initiated during the recession which means that two million Americans have lost the unemployment benefit.

However, this is justified because of the declining unemployment rate which suggests that the people who have lost the unemployment benefit have acquired a job (Morath and House, n.pag.). My point, however, is that the unemployment rate – while declining – has not paced itself with the labor market in terms of job availability. As of November 2014, there were still 9.1 million without a job according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (1). A total of 2.4 million people received the jobless benefit which dropped as the economy paved its way towards recovery.

There are still a significant number of individuals who are unemployed but did not receive benefits. While it is claimed that cutting back the benefits program has encourages many people to take on jobs, it is also true that many still remain unemployed who should be compensated. It is true that many jobs have been created but many people of varied composition remain unemployed. It is more rational to include those unemployed persons in the unemployment benefits scheme instead of cutting back the scheme as it leaves them helpless.
