Download file to see previous pages In 1997, the EU decided to give 5 central and Eastern Europe countries a chance to join the EU, one of the countries was Estonia. This is where the journey of Estonia into joining the EU started. In 1998, the Europe agreement came into force and this was the legal basis between Estonia and the EU until 2004 when a full accession treaty was signed in 2004. The Europe agreement contained cooperation in political affairs, economy, trade, crime prevention, and culture (Angelopoulos, Economides, and Kammas 2007, p.890). The agreement promoted bilateral relations between Estonia and European Union. The agreement also helps Estonia's ambitions to grow its economy and carry out comprehensive reforms in leadership and trade. Furthermore, it created conditions for the expansion of free trade relations.

Some of the reasons why Estonia wanted to join the EU were to have free trading conditions for agricultural products, fish products, and processed agricultural products (Angelopoulos, Economides, and Kammas 2007, p.890). They also wanted the subsidies for EU agricultural products eliminated on agricultural exports and to bring to an end the unfair practice of anti-dumping. Another reason was the problem of customs and duty-free services that Estonia encountered on several occasions and some occasions discrimination in applying port fees. In trade restrictions, Estonia wanted the obstacles put on the marketing of log houses produced in Estonia removed (Bent, 2003).
After joining the EU in 2004, it has shown that it is an active and constructive member and it has continued with EU policies in furthering its integration. Estonia joining the EU has increased its political and economic profile; a strong EU in the world makes Estonia a successful country. Seven years after joining the EU, Estonia adopted the EU currency, the euro. When Estonia joined the EU, it accepted within the accession agreement to join the economic and monetary union after the country attained Maastricht criteria. Being a member of the eurozone has been something positive in terms of eurozone vitality and sustainability.
