? Is there 'one best way' to manage an organization? Introduction Organizational management is not one but a set of practices aimed at managing the business or an organization, its employees and other stakeholders. The set of practices for organizational management intends to bring the people of the organization into a common platform and instill common objectives in order to achieve the organizational goals. Managing an organization or a business includes an underlying plan of optimal allocation of resources in the business process and then establishing systems to control the performance of the organization in line with the set standards (White, 1926). Managing an organization effectively indicates good management of the employees and getting them aligned with the mission and vision of the organization. The roles and responsibilities of the manpower resources are allocated and expectations from the people of the organization are explained in the process of organizational management. Managing an organization The organization is a place where people from diverse background and having varying educational levels come to work in a common platform with their individual vested interests. It is obvious that the people in the organizational workforce would have different culture, habits, beliefs and ideologies. This would create differences between the manpower resources as well as alignment between manpower resources of same ideology. The result is the formation of several groups among similar people in the organization (Singla, 2013). Such a situation is against the organizational objective for which management of organization is essential. The management of the organization is aimed at bring the people, employees and other stakeholders in to common platform and training them into order to make them aligned with the organizational objectives. Through organizational management, it is ensured that the employees and the workforce work as a team and in close co-ordination with each other. The effective ways of managing an organization develop a sense of indispensability among the employees and also develops a sense of loyalty for the organization (Longenecker, 2009). By managing an organization effectively, the tasks could be accomplished in the required timeline with whole hearted participation of the employees and co-ordination among various departments. The ways of managing an organization involve a set of practices which include planning, organizing, staffing, leading, control, management of time and motivating people to meet the organizational goals. Planning is the foremost step of managing an organization. In order to achieve the goals in line with the objectives of the organization, a proper plan should be prepared for implementation that takes into account the opportunities, limitations and risks associated with the process (Hatten, 2011). The planning not only includes the ways to manage the people and the workforce for carrying out the activities but also considers finances required and the available assets to carry out the business functions. The plan involves the budgeted expenses and the sources of finance in order to meet the expenses. Both the financial and the non-financial aspects are planned in order to effectively manage the organization. The next step is the organization of the resources as per the plan in order to fulfill the required usage. The resources that have planned for usage are allocated in the appropriate paces according to the fulfillment of the suitability criteria (Keith and Gubellini, 1958). The organization of the resources including land, labor, capital and enterprises leads to the outcome of optimum results in the business process. The productivity levels of the organization are enhanced with proper organization and marshalling of resources. The tasks of the business process are completed in due time and this result in the increase in the business turnover. The profitability of the business could be maximized and this results in the generation of the desired cash flows. The staffing activity or the recruitment of manpower is an important part of the management of an organization. In order to meet the desired goals of the organization, the people entering the organization should be screened at the stage of entry by judging with the help of various tests that the people recruited would be able to serve the best interests of the organization (Kumar and Sharma, 2000). After the stage of recruitment, the manpower of the organization should be trained. The expectations of the employees as well as the organization should be exchanged in order to earn mutual respect. Managing the organization would mean keeping employees content and satisfied with the work culture in order to obtain the required output. Leadership skills are a part of managing the organization. Leadership skills would require setting benchmark standards for the people and guiding them in the right direction to meet the organizational targets (Badenhorst-Weiss, Brevis and Cant, 2008). The managers should make sure that there are no differences among the team members on professional grounds. The leader must ensure that the team members work in harmony in order to produce maximum output. The leaders would be responsible for the right decision at the right point of time for sustenance of the business process. As rightly said, “Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things” (Drucker, 2005). The planning, organization and leadership activities for implementation of organizational policies should be followed by the controlling action of the business functions to effectively manage the organization. The hierarchies in the organization should be well defined so that work could be delegated in a smooth manner. The reporting authorities should be aware of all the updates in the business process and the roles of their subordinates. As rightly said, “There go my people. I must find out where they are going so I can lead them” (Ledru-Rollin, 1874). Based on such informational data, the managers are required to take control action for keeping the business functions in line with the organizational expectations. The required instructions are required to be passed to the employees in order to control the observed deviations. Time management of the assigned duties and responsibilities is essential for everyone in the organization. The organization runs with a profit motive that is fulfilled by the servicing of its client base. The completion of the tasks by the employees in the required deadline helps to improve the service level of the organization and increases the prospects of long term growth. In order to get the required work done in the allocated time, motivation is the key strategy for managing the organization. It is known that all the employees of the organization do not have equal capabilities and vary in the quality as well as quantity of output (Barrile, Bini and Cameron, 2004). The organization could bring up the average performance level of the employees through a system of motivation. In this strategy, the organization may choose to reward the employees with high level of performance and in the process pull up the average level of performance of the organization. Conclusion The aspect of managing an organization is essential from the view point of the diversity and differences in perspective and interest level of the individual employees, groups and departments. The management of an organization brings the employees in several cross-functional roles into a common platform where they could get aligned to a common organizational objective and goal. There is not just one way to manage an organization. Depending on the level of diversity and deviation from the organizational policies, mission and vision, strategies for managing the organization would be developed. The employees, finance and other resources for running the business process of an organization need to be managed through proper planning, implementation and control in order to accomplish fulfillment of organizational tasks in stipulated time.
