Personal Assessment of Management Skills Summarize your level of management skills compared to 1500 other collegestudents who have done this assessment. What quartile were you in? Did your quartile ranking surprise you? How does this assessment compare with how you see yourself? Management skills make each person unique. Different people have varying types of management skills. These might occur naturally or can be learned by an individual. Nonetheless, management skills are important to the personal life of an individual, and these influence their professional life.

Most people have failed to identify the types of management skills they have, yet this is important. However, some people have given themselves more credit than they deserve, with regard to their management skills. Nonetheless, it is paramount for one to assess their management skills, in order to gain an insight in how to address different management issues. This is also important in realizing the areas that require improvement in future, with regard to management skills. In the personal assessment I undertook, I conducted a self-assessment of my management skills, and had two of my associates conduct other personal assessment of my management skills.

In my self-assessment, I rated my behavior as it is, and not as I would like it to be. This was important to avoid any form of bias in the results or final scores. Therefore, my answers to the survey questions were realistic; and after the survey, I performed the scoring. The score of my self-assessment is 370. According to the rankings, this score means that I am in the third quartile, as far as my management skills are concerned. This came as a surprise, as being in the third quartile means that one shows a quite low ability as far as management is concerned.

Although I consider management skills important in my daily life, as well as in my future profession, I thought I was average in management capability. However, I use my management skills to plan and run my life. Nonetheless, these results are quite surprising to me, because, although I know I possess considerable management skills, I did not think I could rank in the third quartile. Based on the scoring key for the 10 major areas, identify two areas that stand out to you as your greatest strengths and two where you need to develop.

Based on the scoring key, I was able to identify different areas, which show my greatest strengths and my major weakness, as far as management skills are concerned. My major weakness in management lies in the aspect of building effective teams and teamwork. Another area of weakness lies in managing conflicts. These are some of the most important areas of management, thus, I should work on strengthening these in future. On the other hand, the areas of my major strengths in management, according to the assessment is gaining power and influence, and solving problems creatively.

Nonetheless, these are also important in management. However, I can use these strengths to develop the areas of my weakness. Compare the scores you gave yourself with the scores your associates gave you, using the scoring key on pg. 42 The overall score I got from my self-assessment does not vary greatly from what I got from my associates. The results from one of my associates indicated a score of 370, which is exactly similar to the score I got from my self-assessment. However, the score from another associate read 365.

Therefore, the score from the second associate indicates that I am in the bottom quartile, while the first associate’s score shows that I am in the third quartile. Therefore, the results from the three surveys do not vary at a great length. What areas showed the greatest variance between how you assess your management skills and how others see you? What do you attribute these differences to? In the scores from my self-assessment, and the personal assessments from my associates, there are some areas, which showed considerable variance.

First, the area skill area of leading positive change exhibited a considerably big variance. In my self-assessment, I scored low in this area. However, my associates ranked me highly in this area. Therefore, while my associates see the ability of leading positive change in me, I somehow have not fully realized this capability in me. This difference could have come about because of my interaction with my associates. It seems I have done things, which have influenced them in one way or another, even though I did not consider those things with great importance.

Another area of great variance is the building effective teams and teamwork. Although this in this area I scored the lowest in my self-assessment, the scores from my associates are considerably high. This means that, while I have failed to see my potential for teamwork and team development, my associates have seen that in me. Was this exercise useful to you? This exercise was of great use to me. This involved assessing my management skills. Therefore, my self-assessment has helped me know how I perceive myself, including my level of management skills.

On the other hand, the personal assessment by my associates has helped me know how my associates rank me, as far as my management skills are concerned. Although the scores I got from my self-assessment do not vary greatly with those from y associates, there are some differences in the rankings of my skill areas, which are important to me. For instance, in the areas I ranked myself lowly, while my associates ranked me highly, I have learnt to identify these areas as my strengths and capitalize on them in future.

This also applies to the areas I ranked myself highly, but my colleagues ranked me lowly. Overall, this exercise has made me to take the personal initiative of improving my management skills in future, as this will influence my career, apart from my personal life.
