Human Relations And Health Information Management Introduction Knowing one’s skills and personality type allows us to make suitable decisions related to our career. There are several tests designed for professionals and students that would help them become aware of their strengths and weaknesses along with personality traits along and suitable careers. Two of most famous and reliable personality inventory tests are SIGI3 inventory and Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator. These tests have been designed to identify personality and skills inventory that would help students and other professionals to understand their personality types and make relative career-related decisions in the light of these findings. Various studies have indicated that these tests are effective in making career-related decisions and are also accurate in providing correct results (Borgen & Betz, 2008; Capraro & Capraro, 2002; Garis & Niles, 1990). These tests have been taken for the purpose of this research paper and the findings are used to identify personality type and suitable career path in prospective employers. Personality Inventory The findings of SIGI3 inventory and its corroboration with MBTI test helped in understanding that my personality type is ESTJ which is an abbreviation of extroverted, sensing, thinking and judging (“Jung Test Results”, n.d). According to output of the test, individuals with this personality type have administrative skills and they remain in touch with external environment. Furthermore, they are very responsible and are named as pillar of strength by the test. Findings of SIGI3 test indicated that my personal values are contribution to the society, high income, leadership, prestige, leisure, independence and variety. All these values score above average in the field of health information management (SIGI3, 2013). Interest fields included business and health whereas personality was named as enterprising and social. Skills included persuasion, coordination, supervision, preparation and organization of reports, collection of information, planning, analysis of numerical information, and attention to details. Comparing these findings related to personal interests, skills and values with MBTI’s results indicated that my personality type is of figure that would assume responsibilities and is able to work in team-based work environment effectively. In addition to that, I have strong analytical skills that are essential for health information management. My preferred job-related tasks would be collection of information and deducing necessary trends out of it along with planning concerning numerical data. When examined with the help of SIGI3 preferred employment in the light of test’s results and my current majors, it was found that my preferred career path would be in the health information administration. The usual jobs available in health information management are health information administrator, health information technician, healthcare risk manager, compliance manager and healthcare revenue cycle manager. Out of these, my preferred care path would health information administrator/ manager. In order to pursue my career as health information administrator and achieve directorial position in the said field, there are several skills that I would need to develop. The role itself involves managing patient’s information in healthcare facilities, designing of systems for collection; storage and analysis of data along with ensuring information integrity by maintaining proper security (SIGI3, 2013). This role further entails analysis, interpretation, classification and coding of data according to medical standards. In addition to that, being a health information administrator requires working closely with financial professionals within and outside the organization for departmental budgeting and accurate reimbursement with minimum turnaround time. Supervising health information technicians, coders, transcriptionists and clerical staff is a major part of this role (SIGI3, 2013; Temple University, 2013). The given role is usually available in insurance companies and healthcare facilities. Also, these professionals can also operate as independent consultant. For a stable career path in the given field, strong analytical, communication, tactful and diplomatic negotiation and leadership skills are the prerequisite along with technical knowledge (SIGI3, 2013). Changes in federal medical policies require these professionals to stay abreast of their peers by staying up-to-date. Same skills can further lead to peripheral roles like coding compliance manager, Coordinator-Health IT and medical coding, clinical audit specialist, clinical reimbursement manager, billing specialist, clinical relations specialist etc (Temple University, 2013). 3. Preferred Employers for Selected Role The preferred employers for this role will be Meridian health hospital and UnitedHealth Group. Meridian health hospital has been included in Fortune 100 Best companies to work for in consecutive four years (“Your Company Can be”, 2013). On the other hand, UnitedHealth Group has been named as a top employer via a survey conducted by U.S. News (2011) and has extensive operations all over US. Another major reason for selecting these companies as the prospective employers is their visions, values and missions. According to website of Meridian Hospital and their annual report, values of this organization include honesty, integrity, respect, compassion, balance, diversity with the vision of being the best health system in New Jersey (Meridian Health, 2013b). The same organization has major awards and recognitions on its profile including best place to work, NJBIA’s outstanding employer award, 100 most wired health system, magnet award for nursing excellence, U.S. News & World Report 2013-2014 best hospitals (Meridian Health, 2013). Meridian Health Hospitals comprises of six hospitals having different specialties. Some of my family members have worked within its hospitals and consider it to be great learning experience for beginners and mid-level professionals. The employers do offer a stable career path but there are limited career advancement opportunities at one time. However, management values employees with strong professional skills and personal traits required for this industry. In addition to that, perks and benefits are exceptional with average salary being industry competitive. An extensive analysis of its financial statements shows that it is engaged with major research in cancer cure and neuroscience. The hospital appears active in terms of innovation, new advancement and adaptation of technology. The annual report does not show massive profits since it’s a non-profit organization however updates regarding employee management and current facilities indicate that it is a stable organization with promising future. Apart from being a top employer in healthcare industry, amount received from insurance providers and private patients indicate that this employer has a great scope for career in health information management. Furthermore, reviews from web and personal references indicate that my personal values comply with its organizational culture (Glassdoor, 2013). Another selected employer is UnitedHealth Group. It has been referred as a top insurance provider all across United States. The values of this organization indicate its concern for basic ethics and personal integrity. The employer also claims to value compassion and hard work of its employees and further places relationship building with community, customers and partners at high priority (UnitedHealth Group, 2013). The organization had revenues of US 111 billion in last fiscal year and claims to have growth of 9 percent every year (UnitedHealth Group, 2012). With extensive customers and partners’ operations comes the need for health information managers who are well-versed with coding techniques and reimbursements. It also has number of vacancies available currently which shows its widespread operations. I have several acquaintances who have volunteered in this organization and a family friend who has worked in a billing department in managerial role. Their feedback indicated that United Group is a very professional employer with all the processes streamlined according to industry standards. Due to extensive operations, it has ample career advancement opportunities available however the work environment is very demanding whereas compensation is industry competitive along with other benefits. Online reviews also showed that this employer requires overtime from its employees for which they are compensated (Glassdoor, 2013b). Information retrieved from web and personal references regarding its culture, mission, vision and career growth opportunities indicated this employer has suitable growth opportunities to offer (Unionhealth Group, 2013). Since I believe in hard work and have strong analytical skills with comfort in working in a team-based environment, UnitedHealth Group is one of my preferred employers. Conclusion Findings of MBTI indicated that my personality type is ESTJ which indicates comfort while working with others and strong analytical skills. On the other hand, SIGI3 was used to identify prospective career which was found to be health information administrator/ manager in the healthcare and insurance industry. Employers for this role were found out with the help of web-based research regarding top employers and their detailed analysis with reference to their culture, mission, vision and financial performance. The output of this research was UnitedHealth Group and Meridian health hospital. Both the organizations are known for their vast operations and extensive career opportunities. Feedback from web-based and personal resources indicated that their culture, leadership and values conform to my personality type which further helped in the decision.
