Applicable to both urban and peri-urban farmers in developed and developing countries, farmers are required by the law to practice and observe food packaging to prolong the life span of agricultural products. For food safety issues, farmers are required by the law to practice food labeling. Conclusion: Even though the law in US and India requires farmers to practice and observe food packaging and labeling, not all urban and peri-urban farmers are following this requirement. Recommendations:  (1) Incorporate food labeling in the supply chain system of urban farming, (2) Keep the supply chain system of urban farming as short as possible.

In recent times, the topic of urban agriculture has become a hot topic of debate in the mainstream media. Bone (2008) stated that: “…as food prices rise and the economic downturn bites, ways to grow your own, on your doorstep, are likely to become increasingly popular”. Initiatives for urban farming have begun to spring up all over the UK. In 2008, The Guardian newspaper covered a story about an urban farming project in Middlesbrough, Teesside. More than a thousand residents of Middlesbrough took part in the eight-month project, which was a resounding success (Early, 2008).

These kinds of projects are beginning to spring up everywhere in the UK as people begin to realize that importing fresh fruit and vegetables from abroad is not an environmentally sustainable way to live, especially when the same product can be grown locally and sold cheaper. But such projects are by no means exclusive to the UK, and they are happening all over the world.
