Precise Molded Products Case StudyI. Problem Statement How can Precise Molded Products Inc. (PMP) maintain the quality of their products as well as lessen the rejects in their production?II. Alternatives and Evaluation1. The company will hire a new quality manager.Pros:It is possible that the company can get a better manager than Bob.New and fresh ideas about quality management will flow inside the company. Cons:It can be costly because the new manager might demand for a high salary. It will take time for the new manager and the whole department to adjust.

Bob may have conflict with the company for replacing him.2. The whole quality department, including Bob Thomas, will undergo a new training to improve his quality management skills and add employees to the quality department after that.Pros:Bob will be able to refresh what he learned in college and apply it to his work. The whole department can improve their work performance. The department will have new ideas and more people to help with the job. Cons:It will be very costly to hold training and at the same time add more people in the department.

Bob might take it personally and think that the company does not have faith in his management skills. The company will have to allot additional time for the training.3. The company will invest on high-end facilities to lessen production rejects.Pros:Human errors will be prevented in the manufacturing of the products.Lesser human resource will be needed because of technology. The company will save money because they will not spend a lot of money on employee salary.Cons:These kinds of facilities might be very costly.

Machines may not be as accurate as humans. The company will have to train their employees in order to operate these kinds of facilities.III. Having the whole quality department undergo a new training will definitely help them improve their performances in ensuring quality in the company.

Through this training, Bob will be able to refresh what he had learned in the university and function well as the quality manager. With this training, the company will be able to retain its employees who have been working in the company for a long time. Hiring a new manager will not only be costly but is also risky. I think it is better to retain the employees and just improve their performance. Also, the company may spend some money on the trainings and additional working hours for the whole department but the results will benefit the company in the long run.

It is better to invest on human capital today and have the long-term benefits than save money today and continuously incur losses because of the rejects in the future.IV. Implementation The top management will hold a meeting and talk to the members of the quality department and ask them about their problems and concerns about their department, the products, and the company as a whole. After evaluating the problems encountered in the department, professional trainees will hold the training. The training will include team buildings to improve the employees’ relationship with each other so that conflicts and communication barriers will be prevented.

Second, TQM training will be done because it is now widely used to ensure quality in all aspects of the company. Total Quality Management is also capable of eliminating defects and errors in operations (Stark, 1998). Six Sigma will also be included in the training. This is now a popular trend in management where data-intensive methodology is used to eliminate defects in the company’s production (“Six Sigma”). This will help Bob Thomas in lessening the production rejects of the company using systematical approaches.
