?Working in Organisations – “What do people want from work” Working in an Organization: Working in the organization is to have better social interaction with the others in the company, being responsible for the specific job concerned is the focal aspect and other activities like customer service, finance etc are taken care by the respective departments. People do have certain expectations from the place they work. Some people work to fulfill their basic necessities, some others work to explore their potentials, and few others to achieve their goals and objectives. The primary factor that comes to mind when talking about work is money. This is said to be on the list of priority and the foremost reason, why people want to work. People wish to work for a better pay, and for a better life style for which money is the key factor that motivates them to work and to increase their expectations to work for an organization. Another factor that people want from their work is satisfaction. People work as a team in an organization both to help others and to help themselves for which they get paid and thus they derive satisfaction with this kind of an activity. People tend to have a look out for social interactions in the organizational environment. For example, if one has to go to work, complete the day’s task, and has to come back and has no interactions at any point, is said to become redundant, and thus the person’s work impacts his performance and achievements, personally and professionally. If the person goes about in this manner, he might turn out to be anti-social at times. Thus with the work culture in the organization, people want to be socially active where most of the social needs are taken care of. Most people have set of varied reasons as to what they want from work and how they attain the same. They work for money, fun, social interactions and relations etc. According to Abraham Maslow who proposed in his paper, (A Theory of Human Motivation, 1943), talks about different cycles where human beings have varied expectations at different phases of life. His model is said to have five phases, starting with the bottom phase that talks about the most basic needs, and after this safety is the next phase, after the safety factor the expectation of humans was for love and belongingness factors, the next phase is the self esteem where the humans have the zeal to attain respect and have achievements in life, and the top most phase as defined by Maslow was self actualization, which means that a person being more innovative, open to challenges, and moral. To correlate Maslow’s theory of different phases of what people want out of work is, they tend to move on and grow at each phase, and a specific set of necessities are fulfilled at each level they grow. This helps them further to attain more to achieve more. At the initial stages a person works to fulfill his basic wants of life. As this is fulfilled he works to earn for a better living, and as and when these basic necessities are being met, he is then motivated to work for aspects like meeting his targets, challenges, recognition at work etc. On the other hand, people work not just with the mentioned objectives. They have their own specific reasons and objectives to work and their expectations would differ vastly. This is because of a variety of opinions and views coming up from different people and, at times it gets tougher for the employer to analyse and address the aspirations of the people in a particular organization in diverse forms. What do people want from, work: To analyse the thin line of what do the people want from work in the organization is drawn with the set of various factors that create the environment for people to work and also to have certain expectations accordingly. Respect that one receives at work is derived from the work culture that is followed in the organization. The fact that one works in an organization for a longer period of time is a clear sign that the person has gained respect on all grounds, no matter what job is being taken up. Apart from being respected, one also expects to be recognized at work place. This is done when the person works harder and expects acknowledgement in terms of recognition in the company like merit certificates, rewards etc. As per Dawkins .J (What do people want from work, Sep 2007) who in his article states that certain employees have expectations to be rewarded financially. This could be probable with employees who are both hard workers and smart workers. On the other hand there are people who are career oriented, who work in a way where they develop their professional skills. This would enable them to take a step ahead and also to have a strong hold on their job. Certain people want to have a vocation which is the rewarding aspect of their career. This phase of people dedicate most of their time to their career and spend very less time for themselves and their social aspects of life. Other set of people who basically want their social needs to be fulfilled in the work environment. The activities at work help them to socially interact with people around and thus they socialize accordingly. For example, people who work as event organizers, clubs etc who always want to work by socializing with people. Their motive is to keep intact that others had a best time to the maximum possible. Other types of employees are the ones who are focused to acquire the sync with each other in the company. These are the people who love to be a part of a bigger group in the organization. They are said to cherish and keep the values of the organization up and want them to be high at all times. What one wants from work influences the motivational levels of the employee, being valued as an employee, morale, and the quality of life is appraised with the work done. Employee expects to be respected and valued at the work place, one could always be simple yet assertive actions would lead to ones dignity, role and responsibility. One wants to start from the crux to learn and grow to the peak level. People want success from the work they do. It is an acknowledged factor that money is on the prime focus of work, similarly ones success also depends on the work he does in the organization, and aspects such as the role and the responsibility are taken into account. The kind of package, perks, incentives, bonuses, rewards and recognition, timely vacations etc are certain added advantages that help the employee to grow along with the organizational growth. Employees are said to be suitable to the role and operations they perform in the organization, also they want to have clarity of understanding as to what is the work that is expected from them. This helps them to perform and achieve better results. People at work also want the help and support of their supervisors so that the obstacles that hinder the performance are taken off. Another factor that employees lookout for is to be a part of initiatives more often. This motivates them to keep moving ahead. From the employee’s perspective, one wants the best factors to influence his work so as to fetch the best results. This happens with various aspects such as meeting the needs of the employees on a professional front and valuing them to the core. Rewarding the right person brings about a big change both for the organization and also for the employee. This could be in terms of rewards, giving a higher role for the employee and a bigger responsibility accordingly. These could be certain factors which one wants at work. Organisations at times might find it rather tough to meet all the demands of its employees at work, although analyzing them would help work on the same for a better work culture. This improves the satisfaction levels of the employees at work and ultimately the productivity and the efficacy of the organization tend to improve. References: Maslow,A.H., 1943.
