Research In Motion Analysis Research In Motion Analysis “Research In Motion (RIM), a global leader in wireless innovation, revolutionized the mobile industry with the introduction of the BlackBerry® solution in 1999” (RIM Introduces New BlackBerry Bold Smartphones, 2011). Research In Motion (RIM), the Canadian blackberry phone manufacturer, needs no introduction in the global cellphone market. Even though RIM was the leader in the cellphone market a decade before, same thing cannot be said about it now.

The entry of Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy S2 with superior technologies and features raised strong challenges to Blackberry’s supremacy. In a heavily competitive globalized business world, RIM cannot survive without the complete restructuring of its strategies with respect to human resources, information systems, marketing etc. Earlier RIM concentrated mainly in American and European markets for selling its blackberry phones. However, recent recession caused severe problems in these regions and RIM slowly shifted its focus towards the more prosperous and emerging Asian region.

India and China are some of the emerging markets which are concentrated by RM now. However, it is not easy for RIM to penetrate in this market because of the strong dominance of others mobile manufacturers such as Nokia, Samsung, Apple etc in these markets. Since Canada is a democratic country, RIM may not experience much political troubles in India; however in China the case is entirely different. RIM should recognize that the political, legal, environmental, social, cultural and linguistic climate in overseas countries is extremely different from that in Canada.

So, RIM should fine tune its HRM policies in overseas countries in accordance with the above mentioned differences. RIM should modify its technology used in blackberry phones in order to make it suitable to the legal requirements in other countries. For example, in India RIM is facing strong challenges with respect to technology. “India says it wants realtime access to RIMs BlackBerry Enterprise Email and its Messenger services in a readable format. Security officials say the inability to monitor BlackBerry traffic undermines efforts to protect national security” (FACTBOX - Problems BlackBerry services face in India, 2010).

RIM was not much ready to accept the claims of Indian government. RIM argued that they don’t have the technology to cater the needs of Indian authorities; however, it assured India that it will provide manual access to its messenger services. India is not fully satisfied with the offers of RIM. Similar problems were faced by blackberry in China also. It should be noted that China is a country which is keeping a strong control over the mobile communication services as part of their ongoing censoring strategies.

“Research In Motion (RIM) founder Mike Lazaridis ordered a BBC reporter to end an interview after he was asked about his problems with India and Middle Eastern countries over security issues” (BlackBerry chief ends BBC interview after India query, 2011). RIM should never approach problems emotionally. It should recognize that overseas markets needs some fine tuning in its existing organizational strategies with respect to HRM, marketing and technology. RIM should redefine its marketing strategies also in overseas countries.

It should be noted that the marketing strategies successful in American and European countries may not succeed in Asia because of the cultural difference. David Beckham or Tiger Woods could be a better brand ambassador for RIM in European and American markets whereas in Asian markets, Sachin Tendulkar or Jackie Chan would be the ideal candidates for RIM as brand ambassadors. Even if the product is the same, the markets are different. RIM should realize this principle well to stay in the market.
