There are several patterns of how individuals communicate with another and these forms are dictated by the participants, context, and awareness of norms, purpose, and the way they interact. Communication is important in business organizations. According to Booth (2008), an organization refers to an institution which is characterized by a group of people who coordinate activities to achieve individual and collective goals. Therefore, in an organization, communication is characterized by the transfer of information from one party to another, and the transfer of meaning across the structure of the organization.

Booth (2008) argued that communication is the process of sharing information within a shared interpretative framework for information to be meaningful and useful. This paper I will discuss the processes underlying communication success and failure in a business organization. Cases of Successful Organizational Communication In order to ensure successful organizational communication, managers should liaise with their colleagues in order to achieve the most effective communication. This is important because, in a business organization, communication is an important indication of the health of an organization.

In order to ensure successful organization communication, it is vital for managers to adopt supportive communication strategies. This will guarantee that, within the organization, people will be able to communicate accurately and honestly without compromising interpersonal relationships. Supportive communication is important since it enhances a competitive advantage for individuals and organizations. As posited by Mills (2005), relationship skills and interpersonal communication skills are fundamental to emotional intelligence (EQ) that has been shown to be significantly more important that cognitive ability and technical expertise combined.

Hence, to enhance supportive communication, communication models have been used to analyze the means for effective communication, and explore methods for improving communication in organizations (Molesworth & Denegri-Knott 2004). According to Molesworth and Denegri-Knott (2004) the prime goal of communication is persuasion, an attempt by the speaker to influence other people. In the work of Mills (2005), the author focuses on the purpose and goals of communication before addressing his communication model by stating that the purpose of communication is four-fold; a) not logically contradictory or inconsistent with itself; b) behavior-centered, which is expressed in terms of human behaviors, c) be specific enough for individuals to be able to relate it to actual communication behavior, and d) be consistent with the ways in which people do communicate (Booth, 2008).

Factors contributing to success of organizational communication In order for an organization to achieve its goals, all workers, and other stakeholders must be fully engaged in the production process or in the organizational activities. This means that participation is a means of achieving the company-desired goals.
