Extract of sample "Personal Development Plan"

Personal Development Plan Inserts His/her 8th November, Part Goal Devise a such that on Monday- Friday I work from 9-5 p.m.;sleep from 5-7 p.m.; watch a movie / t.v with family from 7- 11 p.m. whereas on Saturday and Sunday I study (Evening Program) from 6p.m onwards ; read books, watch t.v, go to gym from 8-3 p.m.This is relevant to my life as I intend to complete my Masters while working; that is, I shall fund my studies and thus, I would require an ideal routine whereby I can stay healthy mentally and physically.

The goal above is attainable because it’s realistic and fulfills all my needs. Goal 2: Planting at least one tree in a month in my neighborhood. This is relevant and attainable as this is an inexpensive and convenient goal for me and I can monitor progress my counting the number of trees I’ve planted in 6 months.Goal 3: Taking career counseling classes twice a week for 3 hours per week from my school as well as a professional institution that deals in career development training. This goal is going to develop my skills during the transition period and enable me to make the right career decision by helping me develop intellectual and emotional ability and helping me overcome my anxiety of entering into the professional world from the academic world.Part 2) Goal 4: Enhance my public speaking skills by giving at least 5 presentations to an audience of at least 7 people or more within the next 6 months.

The goal is relevant and attainable because I intend to develop my career in a field whereby I’d require confidence and excellent public speaking skills to excel. Thus, I realize that not only do I have to be successful in my academic life but also in my professional career. I have the ambition and conviction to attain it and also have ample time before I enter into my professional life.Goal 5: Reduce the stress arising out of my hectic life and lack of work-life balance by doing at least 2 hours of yoga everyday for 6 weeks (till my exams).

This goal is attainable and relevant because I experience high levels of stress during my exams which results in lack of concentration needed to effectively solve the paper. Part 3) Goal 4: The action I’d take is to book a hall for my presentations at Community Club in my neighborhood by 15th November, 2011. The resources required shall include around $300 for books, another $250 for online classes and Joe, my mentor. These resources shall pinpoint the areas of improvement for me. I might have to collect more pocket money from my parents and earn from a part-time job which is a challenge.

If I do well, however, I shall reward myself by hosting an event at my school. Goal 5: The action I’d take is calling the Yoga centre to enroll for the Yoga classes by 13th November. The resources I shall require include a yoga mat costing around $30, $300 for the Yoga classes. I’d do Yoga for 2 hours a day for 6 weeks and I’d also take along my friend Harry for the Yoga. I shall mark my attendance everyday and mark my stress each day on a scale of 10, a higher number indicating higher stress.

If I succeed I shall reward myself by buying myself a videotape of the world’s best Yoga experts.Part 4) I developed a PDP where my goals were to create an effective PDP that results in my getting at least 18/20 points of a length of roughly 2 pages using MLA referencing style. The action required was writing a draft and researching on the essentials of a PDP. The resources required were 2-3 hours of brainstorming and around an hour for writing it down. I shall definitely try to attain the 2 goals mentioned in part 3 because they are the goals closest to my lifestyle and they are the building blocks of my future goals.

Also, they are relatively easy to accomplish. Part 5) I would require my employees to do so because the PDP would enable them to get a sense of direction, an aim to work towards and ultimately goals that they can monitor their performance against (Grit and Sijde). Not only will it enhance their skills and improve their weaknesses but it will help them monitor their progress and control their outcomes in an effective manner which will ultimately determine their rewards and compensation in the corporate ladder.

Most employees fail because they do not know what is expected out of them- the PDP shall help overcome this difficulty. References:Grit, Roel and Nico van der Sijde. Managing Your Competencies: Personal Development Plan . Taylor & Francis, 2009.
