Google mission is to organize the information relating to world and make them universally accessible as well as useful (Google, n.d). Google has a very friendly environment and this helps the employees to fulfill the target on time. Google needs its employee to be innovating and work together for the completion of its project. Google expects its employees to be determined and innovative. With a casual environment in Googolplex, the organization expects employees to deliver its best and work effectively. Company background Google Inc was founded in the year 1998 by Sergey Brin and Larry Page, which focuses on delivering the best search experience on WWW, the World Wide Web. Google with its technology and series of innovation helps its users to find information about any possible thing that the users search for with accuracy, ease and relevancy. Google offers search in multi language and offers new products and services such as advertising and web application. The products and services offered by Google include services such as Google Ad words editor which is a desktop application which is used to handle accounts of Google ad words. Google chrome a web browser and can be run in Windows XP, Vista, 7, Linux, Gun and OS X. Google Desktop, Google earth, Gmail, Google Picasa, Google photo screen saver, Google sketch, Google calendar, Google maps and others (Google-a, n.d). In 2011 the annual sales of Google amounted to $37, 905 almost 29% a relatively higher rate of growth from 2010 which was 24% (Google Investor Relations, n.d). Google founder Sergey Brin and Larry Page had bought Google into life in 1998 and since then the company has grown immensely and today it has about 20,000 employees worldwide and its management team which represents the most experienced professionals (Google-b, n.d). Google generates revenue mainly by advertising which accounts for nearly 97% of the company’s revenue in 2008 and 2009 and about 96% in 2010 (Google-c, 2008, p.24). Observable Components of company Motivation strategy The observable components of Google’s motivational strategy and methods that influences the effort and quality of work of employees are compensation which includes pay, bonuses, raises, company expenses accounts and other incentives. Google has been regarded as the best company by employees to work for and this because Google tends to offers all the compensation to its employees. Google provides a decent pay package for its employees and as per reports Google has increased salary by 10% and $1000 cash bonus as a part of its competitive compensation plan (Dorian, 2011). Google has come up with new incentives to reward employees who perform outstandingly. The award to be rewarded could be worth millions of dollars to employee (Hafner, 2005). Benefits provided by the company such as vacation, childcare, insurance, retirement policies and club membership. Google strive to be innovative and provides with unique benefits to its customers and employees. Google provides medical insurance which includes dental and vision; Flex spending account plan, assistance program for its employees, life and AD&D insurance also voluntary life insurance and other forms of insurances. Google also provides its employees with retirement and saving plan policy such as Google 401 (K) Plan, 529 collage saving plans. Google provides vacation benefits to its employees, for the first year 15 days of vacation, in the 4th year 20 days and in the 6th year 25days. Google provides 12 paid holidays to its employees. Apart from the above benefits there are numerous other benefits which are provided by Google for its employees (Google-d, n.d). Organizational culture takes into consideration the mission vision of the company, team oriented, and people oriented and so on. Google has been known for its culture, it provides a friendly environment for its employees. The corporate headquarter is nicknamed as Googleplex and it has been described as the best company to work for. Google maintains a very casual atmosphere. The company mission is to organize the information and make it universally accepted and useful. The employees of Google work as a team and work together for the betterment of the organization (Google-b, n.d). Training & Development is the last factor which considers factors like learning and growth opportunities, mentoring, training and degrees, opportunities, personal development and others. Analysis of company motivation strategy The theory which can be related to compensation is expectancy theory. According to Victor Vroom’s theory, employees are often motivated to exert a high performance when the employees believe that their effort would eventually lead to good performance appraisal which leads to rewards such as bonus, increase in salary and also promotion. And the reward will in turn satisfy the employee’s personal goals (Robbins, 2010, p.86). Google offers a handsome amount of pay packages along with bonus and other incentives to its employees as a means of its motivational strategy. Google has increased salary by 10% and $1000 cash bonus as a part of its competitive compensation plan (Dorian, 2011). The theory mainly focuses on three relationship, effort-performance relationship; performance-reward and reward-personal goal relationship. Similarly Google also applies the same theory with respect to compensation. Higher the rate of compensation the employees will be highly motivated to work resulting in performance and rewards to fulfill one’s personal goal. The next component talks about benefits with relate to non monetary factors and can be relate to the Maslow’s Hierarchy needs of theory. This theory is based on basic and higher needs. The basic needs talks about food clothing and shelter which can be satisfied by wages. The next level is about safety and security through other forms of financial benefits (Fajardo, 1997, p.179). Google also applies the theory of Maslow’s needs to satisfy employees need and offers other benefits other than salary bonus and other incentives. The next component is organizational culture which relates to Herzberg’s two factor theory which talks about the hygiene and motivational factors. As per the theory conditions which surrounds the jobs like policies of the company, working environment, the culture and other such factors represents the hygiene factors (Robbins, 2010, p.75). Google’s corporate culture can be related to hygiene factors. Strengths of the organizations motivation strategy Strength of Google in terms of motivation strategy: High pay package, good working culture and other financial benefits. Google follows the expectancy theory and believes that monetary benefits are the best form of motivating employees. Then Google is known for its working culture which is very friendly and casuals and allows employee to be innovative. Apart from basic pay Google gives other benefit for its employees such as insurance, vacations, membership etc to keep the employees motivated as per the Maslow hierarchy need theory which satisfy the basic needs and then higher needs. Weaknesses of the organization’s motivation strategy A major weakness in Google’s motivational strategy is that it rewards its employees in form of monetary benefits. But according to the theory of cognitive theory not only extrinsic reward but also intrinsic reward also plays an important role in motivation. An employee needs to be recognized for his deeds and not only in terms of pay packages. Improvements Google should introduce plans which would recognize the capabilities and work done by the employees; should learn to appreciate the work of employees which would motivate its employees. The work pressure as per the employees is merely high which needs to be reduced and should allow the employees to work in a friendlier manner. This would help the employee to work effectively and improve the result. Google should allow its employee to participate and introduce their ideas on innovative ideas and techniques. This would help the employees feel motivated and help in the long run of the organization. Summary and Conclusion Google Inc is recognized as one of the top and favorable work place to work for. Google applies the motivational techniques such as compensation, benefits, and corporate culture as a form of tool for motivating its employees. Google strength in terms of motivational factor lies in its compensation package, its friendly working condition and other extrinsic rewards. Therefore it can be concluded that Google in spite of being a company which has been ranked number one in terms of working condition still suffers from certain drawbacks and like any other organization, Google also follows the motivational technique to motivate its employees who would result in fruitful results for the organization. After analyzing the company and its motivational factor, it can be said that organization needs motivational techniques to motivate its employees whether in form of extrinsic rewards or intrinsic rewards. Employees usually are motivated which in turn leads to rewards and finally help to satisfy own needs. According to Maslow hierarchy needs which tends to fulfill needs right from basic to higher needs believes that as basic needs gets fulfilled, the other needs pop ups and should be satisfied and so on until it reaches the stage of self actualization.
