 1) Initial reaction to this story and my reaction. A conflict of the culture is evident, the manager, Evans lacked the leadership skills to manage multi-racial and multiculturalism organization. A positive organization taps the best workforce in diversity not on the basis gender, race, color, religion, sex-orientation and able-bodiedness but on there skills, creativity, talents and idea they are bringing in to the organization. The organization had passed the test of workforce diversity but the managers lacked the skills of managing multiculturalism. The manager, Evans lacked relevant communications skills and the three main leadership skills; namely team leadership, operation leadership and operation leadership. However, Jones tries to bring in the leadership skills with effective communication skills by involving the Asian cultural forums and bridging the gap with organization core values of safety and English laws. 2) Rating this organization in terms of developing leadership diversity. Based on the information the leadership rating is as follows; Team leadership is weak The leadership is highly autocracy, with Evans making sole decision without consulting or communicating effectively to the workers. Evans is amoral manager and act with emotions to solve issues with no ethical reasoning towards the Asians cultural behaviors and religion. Operation leadership is strong Jones is leading a team of people in a department. He had effective communication skills and managerial skills able to met various stakeholders and strike a balance. He has both responsible and with integrity as he noted the cultural issue within the organization. Strategic leadership is weak. Both the leadership was accountable to the workers whereas the workers were not accountable to air their grievances on the issues instead they involved there spouses to address the issue. The workers lacked confidence and not proactive in addressing the cultural issue. Evans was not prepared to talk on the face about the problem. 3) My opinion on handling this problem. I would offer an authentic leadership; I would know the Asian cultural beliefs and values, by this I will win the trust of the Asian community. I will encourage a open door policy to increase information flow and communication. I would be a moral manager embracing ethical behavior and reasoning all the time, not acting as an after thought as Jones did. I would call for an employee meeting both the safety team and the Asian women, brainstorm on the problem, this is a proactive way of solving the issue while being reflective of the matter. I would seek an opinion of various Asian community forums and legal expert on the same to be in compliance with the law and promoting religious freedom at the same time. With knowledge of the situation, possible options available from the various responses and critical analysis of the immediate and future consequences, I will call the leaders forum and develop a work plan to incorporate a win-win situation. . P384 4) CEO Chris Blount should appoint Carmellita Suarez as CIO. Carmellita should be the next CIO. Reasons Benchmarking both Pat and Carmellita we conclude the following; Pat had preconceived notions on his success in IT thinking he has more expertise than the rest, further during the interview he stated that the board should consider the position on merit of work and reputation. Carmellita had a success in working across departments, i.e. teams and suppliers and she could solve any problem arising in the section. Where as Pat had more narrow capabilities only on technical and intelligence aspect. By evaluating both candidates CEO Chris Blount, is seeking to fill the position with the candidate with the best talent and skills i leadership and managerial. The person should be able to make decisions, thus working with other stakeholders is a key factor of a leader. Carmellita works well with other people and adapts with the trends of the company. Carmellita has skills, she is responsible and she represents the company well by solving issues even with suppliers. 5) Is pat sabotaging his career by thinking of relationship building as office politics that takes the focus away from day to day work? Yes pat is sabotaging his career. Office politics revolves around the power to influence and make the team depend on your decisions. This build career as the leadership skills are put into test on the goals of the company. Pat uses his power as in IT not only to get things done but to selfish way to build his reputation. Relationship building creates team work, teams creates a long time impact on organizations, the organization will be more effective and cohesive. Pat is not creating team work as he differentiates his work and friendship, thus he denies himself the proximity nature to learn the individual personal character. The attraction equation, Pat has destroyed it, office politics creates a degree which he can motivate others. 6) What sources of power do Pat and Carmelita seem to use in the company ? Which person do you believe will be more influential as CIO ? explain Pat sources of power. Pat uses a formal power in that he coerces and uses his authority to get this done. His power is legitimate and has unforgiving attitude to people with less skills. Carmelita sources of power Carmelita uses personal power in that she has the expert and referent powers. She has the expert power in that she has the technical skills and administration skills. She has the referent powers that the has a charisma to influence others. Carmilita is most influential person Carmillita builds coalition and alliance using her charismatic power. She uses her expert power in the administration to solve problems with suppliers and team. She has build a relationship that she knows what is happening in the organization ‘the trends’. From Kent Schlain words, he places a lot of admiration to Carmillita and confesses that he wants to learn more from here. She is sharp, charming and her personality has left Kent admiring the quality of the leader she is, thus she has a rational persuasion power. Read More
