DEPARTMENT OF MANAGEMENT SCIENCE AND INNOVATION QUESTIONNAIRE Questionnaire How do you want to CHANGE THE WORLD and why? I want to change the world so as to make it an all-inclusive, accommodative, resilient, dynamic, and habitable niche for all living organisms. I will do this by employing the numerous skills that I hope to acquire in the field of Bachelor of Management Science. I will achieve this through the acquaintance acquired in the fields of art and science management, critical analytical thinking, data analytics, and behavioural science1. This will empower my approach to the daily routine and change the whole perspective of how I view events. The world is in a constant state of revolution. Therefore, with the increasing human population, various issues arise like environmental degradation, overpopulation, poverty, and drought as well as human conflict, which need urgent attention as a way of preserving humanity and expediting it to keep in touch with the constant changes2. I also want to empower others after my training so that they can embrace education and knowledge. 2. How do you think this degree will help you CHANGE THE WORLD? This degree will equip me with the necessary knowledge that is applicable in the outside world to solve real issues at the grass root level. This empowerment will pave way for innovativeness and knowledge that is a key factor in actualising the daily solution of problems that are recurrent and threatening to the existence of mankind. As the common saying goes, “Knowledge is power”, I am optimistic that by the time of completion of my course, I will have attained general and specific knowledge3. This automatically means that my whole perception of the world will have changed and hence my decision making will be rational. Apart from the knowledge acquisition, I will also improve my interrelation with others. Through the constant interaction with my classmates, who will be from diverse origins, I will be able to understand them more and empathise with them. This interaction will also foster inner understanding of others and in the long run lead to peaceful coexistence since all education and technological inventions will not be useful without peace. 3. How do you think technology will change business in the next 10 years? Technological improvements will revolutionise the whole concept of business. In the next decade, business activities will primarily be run through the internet since it bridges the gap between the producers and consumers4. Through the introduction of online buying and selling of goods and services, the world has become a better place as all the required business transactions that were initially manual will be fully computerised. Transport and communication will be swift and broadened in that many people will be working through their houses, at the beaches or their places of interest. Business transactions will be efficient and swift. Marketing will be taken to a higher level, a phenomenon that will truly transform the world into a global village. Technology will open up the world and interconnect people. 4. What are you best at, and why? At a personal level, I am a good team player apart from having attributes like self-drive and working under minimal supervision. I believe in teamwork and in exploring not only my potential but also the strong points of others. I believe that when a substantial task is subdivided among a few individuals who are working as a group, the problem is easily solved as compared to leaving it to one person. I am also open minded and therefore encourage the introduction of new ideas that do not necessarily need to be my own but those that could emanate from my peers or other concerned parties. 5. What part(s) of the programme will you find most challenging, and why? The most challenging programmes will include Mathematical Foundations of Management I, Mathematical Foundations of Management II, Engineering Sciences Minor II and Engineering Sciences Minor III. This is because they are a new concept introduced for the first time in my academic encounters. Therefore, this means that I will need additional time to grasp the new concepts on the course as well as integrate them in relation to the core courses. However, with the correct guidance and knowledge acquisition on the same, I will overcome that challenge in due time5. 6. Please suggest something that you think everyone on the programme (and everyone teaching on the programme) should read, and why? I think that every persons needs to learn the art and science of management, critical analytical thinking, operations management computational thinking. The art and science of management contains the basic knowledge on the course and also employs artistic skills to deal with the scientific aspect of business management6. On the other hand, critical analytical thinking broadens the scope of ones thinking from various dimensions. This will help in problem solutions as well as future innovations and inventions. Operations management computational thinking marries the baseline knowledge to the technological aspect that is inevitable in the modern day world. 7. Tell us something surprising (about you) that is relevant to your studies on this programme. I have a keen interest in management principles and technological advancements. Therefore, I will not stop at nothing other than ensuring that I have made viable contributions to my field of study7. This follows that much of my time will be channelled to my course work and other related areas of research, which will be a step to help me reach self-actualisation in my studies as a business management scholar8. 8. Why would your future classmates want to have you in their class? My future classmates will be lucky to have me as a classmate simply because I am a goal oriented and self-driven individual with a burning desire to attain knowledge as well as make viable contributions to my area of study. I am a good team player and works exceptionally hard. I not only believe in my strengths but I am also open to criticism. I can learn to tolerate and adjust to the weaknesses of others all together. My Intentions in undertaking this course are clearly spelt out9. I do not want to study so as to be relevant in the job market but to make contributions to this academic field. My thoughts and efforts are not only tied to the class level or the local set up, but to the wider world view scope10. I intend to create solutions and pave way for future research related not only to my field of study but also to other areas that are beneficial to people. Question 6 Management is an art that requires leading, controlling, coordinating, and executing. Management requires astute leadership from those in charge of the programs at the organization level. A review of a book on total quality management (TQM) will give meaningful insights to everyone on the programme that includes those who are teaching the programme. For instance, Total Quality Management, third Ed. Pearson Education by Besterfield, D.H., Besterfield-Michna, C., Besterfield, G. H. & Besterfield-Sacre, M (2003) will provide meaningful insights into the principles of total quality management and management science. It is imperative to note that Total Quality Management is a multidimensional tactic which touches on a number of facets of an organization. Therefore, an incisive approach to TQM will warrant success. The TQM procedure of creating resilient governance, executive commitment, team-building, fitting incentive arrangements, consumer focus, dealer partnerships, and a pledge to unceasing upgrading will enable a firm to generate and sustain outcomes of this method over time. The book on TQM will give all the participants the principles of management together with tools and skills that when successfully executed will lead to the growth and success of the firm Moreover, the insights derived from the book will ensure that all the participants have an outline of the theory, procedures, and plans for presenting and sustaining the ideology of total quality management (TQM) in the firm. Since management science is a broad concept, the ideas of total quality management will enable the participant fine tune their approach to management. Moreover, the participants will be equipped with the following: Principles of quality management Appropriate steps to achieve total quality management Tools and techniques of total quality management Therefore, reviewing the book on total quality management will give all the participants of the program a wholesome approach into the concept of management science. Importantly, it will give meaningful insights on what is required in the management process.
