Successful Team Leadership Plan Successful Team Leadership Plan Company Company Address Memo The Manager Ms. Barbara Subject: My Plan for Successful Team Leadership for the New Market Segment The importance of this memo is to see that you acknowledge the plan that I have made for the success of the team. The approach for demonstration will entail the use of leadership approach so as to show the competence of the team. Each of the team members is analyzed below as per their personality and leadership theories. Individual Evaluation The new market segment team will comprise of Keith, Demetrice, Kendrick, Alexander and I. Keith is observant, highly pragmatic, cool and unpretentious individual. His can make a good interior designer, landscape architect, science teacher, botanist and fashion designer. Demetrice, on the other hand, is: realistic, analytical, logical, can lead a mechanic or business naturally and decisive. She likes organizing and running things. Her possible careers are medical technologists, corporate executive, dentist, teacher or administrator of a health care. Kendrick is gracious, always wants to please and his interpersonal skills are good. He can make a good social worker, nun, childcare worker or an optometrist. Alexander is a private, organized, practical, compulsive and trustworthy individual. He can make a good accountant, office manager, public servant, tax agent or a business manager. Similar to Alexander, I am organized, practical, private, trustworthy and compulsive. I can make a good accountant, office manager, tax agent, business manager or a public servant (Macic and Nutt, 1989). Situation Evaluation The fact that there is already a plan in place for the start of the department makes the process urgent. In consideration of the urgency, I do recommend the team that is set forward as the best team for the new market segment. According to the culture of the Company and the group, I do believe it will be easy for us to operate as a team and act as one. This is due to the fact that we have worked as a team before. The mission of the business is good since it is a long term goal that sees to it that the department picks and achieves the target goals. The market strategy and the market mix seem to favor the start of the new department. The department seems to expect no competition in the market since there is no organization that distributes the exact goods and services that are to be provided by the department. In case of the introduction of new competitors in the market, there are a need to develop goods and services of better quality so as to lead the market. The customers are readily available from the field is new in the area, making the market be still virgin. The goods and services to be produced should be aimed at addressing the customer needs and wants. Emphasis should be laid on the characteristics of the customers. This includes the income level of the potential customers. However, there should be an identification of effective and efficient collaborators. The collaborators in this sector include the agencies, suppliers, distributors and partnership (If needed). The climate of the locations also important since it will determine the productivity of the department. The policies that do support the existence of the new market are available. The economic market in terms of inflation is also stable thus favoring the start of the new market segment. People in the area are educated and have a culture that promotes the start of a new market segment in the region. Leadership Approaches The Trait Approach It takes into consideration the traits of the particular person to determine whether the person can make a good leader or not. Examples of the traits that are for determination include openness, extraversion, and conscientiousness among others. This kind of approach assumes that leaders are born and are not trained. It looks the leadership trait as something that is in the genes and, therefore, someone is either born a leader or not. The main goal of this approach is to select leaders and separate them from those that can’t make good leaders. Its problem is that traits are not general but differ in different situations. It also laid emphasis on the prediction of emergence of leaders as opposed to effectiveness of the leader (Baskent University, 2007). This can be used to determine the leaders through the use of individual evaluation. Individual evaluation gives the traits of the individuals that can be analyzed to determine if one can make a good leader or not. The Behavioral Approach It holds that a given type of behaviors makes one be either a leader or non- leader. It holds that the leadership behaviors can be taught and therefore one doesn’t need to be born a leader to be a leader. The main goal of this approach is that leaders should be developed due to the fact that leaders can be trained to make good leaders. The problem that comes with this approach is that the behaviors that might be termed as effective are not generally in all situations (Baskent University, 2007). This applies the concept of the situation in the identification of leaders. Since a situation affects the behavior, behaviors are used to determine leadership traits of an individual. The way one reacts to different situation can be used to determine whether one is a leader or not. Principles Applied from Various Leadership Theories The trait approach principle is that the traits of leadership are extraversion, openness, conscientiousness and qualified emotional intelligence. The main principle here is that leaders are born and not trained. This is derived from the trait theory (Baskent University, 2007). The Behavioral Approach principle holds that leaders can be trained to be leaders and eventually make good leaders. This principle is derived from the behavioral theories and considers leadership traits to be something that can be impacted on someone (Baskent University, 2007). This memo elaborates on the team and how leaders can be determined. It elaborates on the characters of the individuals that are expected to form the group. This entails evaluation of each and every individual to give them their character traits. It also addresses the evaluation of the situation to which the new market segment is to work on. There is trait approach and behavioral approach to determination of the leaders in the society or place of work. The trait approach is based on the principle that leaders are born and can’t be made. The behavioral approach is based on the principle that leaders can be trained and therefore don’t need to be born. It looks the traits of leadership as something that can be impacted on a person.
