Stop and Shop Stop & Shop Supermarket Company Stop & Shop Supermarket Company is a chain of supermarkets located mainly in the Northeastern United States and it is the largest food retailer in New England. It is a multibillion-dollar corporation owned by Dutch food giant Ahold. It operates over 375 stores in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey. It has a manpower resource of over 58,000 people in its network of stores, distribution centers, manufacturing plants and offices (Foster, 2007).

Because of the very highly competitive nature of the supermarket industry, Stop & Shop gives utmost importance to the management of its inventory. Stop & Shop management realizes that to compete with the mass merchandisers, price and availability is the name of the game. Stock-outs, poorly positioned inventory and low perfect-order fill rates and keeping high inventory levels are not acceptable in the industry (Foster, 2007). To assist Stop & Shop in their supply chain and inventory strategy, they engaged the services of Blue Sky Logistics.

Blue Sky addressed their needs in the areas of warehouse management system, material handling, and order processing. They made use of a supply chain visibility dashboard which provided the exact level of information to each level of management from the top supply chain executive to the warehouse operations manager concerned with inventory fulfillment operations (Foster, 2007). Perfect order fulfillment is then achieved. Other supermarkets which can follow the same route that Stop & Shop took with regards to its inventory and supply chain management are its competitors such as Shaw’s Star Market, Hannaford, ShopRite and the A&P family of supermarkets.
