Phoenix one supersonic airplane Executive Summary Phoenix one supersonic airplane is an improved version of Concorde from the four French and British engineering companies known as Aerospatiale. The aim of the model is to expand and enlarge the demand for supersonic transport. The other main purpose for the production of the airplane was for the maintenance of the high knowledge gained by the manufacturers. In addition, the manufacturers wanted to provide a solid position for the production of the second-generation supersonic transport as well as ensure their participation. It was an opportunity to offer airlines improvement in performance. It can be done by reducing the direct operation costs, extension of the operating range and at the same time conserve the existing investments in crew training and maintenance procedures. To the manufacturers, it would allow for its production a minimum capital cost. The design of the airplane is model B. Selecting this model would be beneficial to both the society and the company as it reduces air pollution hence conserving the environment. If the board approved commencement of the project, following would take place. There would be a reduction of harmful acoustic effect on the airport environment, increase in the operating range, reduction of the fuel consumption, and aerodynamic improvements (Concorde technical specs, 2014). The report was about a proposal investigation of an improved version of Concorde by the name of Concorde B. The report further explained on the quality of work done and the knowledge possessed by the Aerospatiale Company. The report also gave the go-ahead to an exploratory study that was already being done to upgrade the capability of current Concorde design. As an investment project, the Concorde B model will reduce the monopolistic market, which is only dominated by Anglo-French project. The project will also ensure the company participates in the second-generation supersonic aircraft (Concorde technical specs, 2014). The project approval will confirm an economic interest for the company, which led to the improvement of the Concorde. The project is also favorable to the manufacturer as it allows the company to perform these improvements at a minimum capital cost. The investment project will be environmental friendly as business operations are expected to be ethical. The model will reduce the harmful acoustic effect on the airport environment. Previous models had a lot of noise pollution while taking off and landing that will cater for in the new model making it the best investment project. To improve on the income of the airlines, the aircraft will increase the operation range. It will increase connections to other European capital cities to the east coast of the United States in one sector, United States to Japan in two sectors, and Europe to Australia in three sectors. Concorde B model will affect the economies of the airline thereby affecting the citizens. Since the aircraft will be consuming less fuel, the economics of the airlines will reduce, which will translate to a reduction of the ticket prices. The profits generated by the airlines will help grow the economy and improve living standards of the citizens (Kamp, 2003). The investment will not only be beneficial to the manufacturers but also to the airlines and the citizens through reduction of air tickets. The investment will also contribute largely to the growth of the economy, therefore, improving the living standards of citizens. The aircraft will greatly reduce the noise and air pollution as compared to previous aircrafts. According to the benefits derived from the investment project, the report should be approved (Massey, 2008). 2.0 Opportunity description unlike previous aircrafts that covered short distances, the aircraft will be covering long distances to satisfy the needs of its clients who travel for long distances. The manufacturer did a research on the market and consumers before considering improvement on the Concorde. According to the research, the product is in a better position in the market due to its uniqueness, and it is the only one nowadays. Currently, the only competitors for the aircraft are Boeing and Airbus companies. Boeing Company is an American multinational that specializes in designing and manufacturing of aircrafts, rotorcraft, rockets, and satellites. The strengths of the company are that they have a knowledgeable and skilled labor, which can develop high-quality product. The company is planning to invest on the personnel by allowing them time and resources to invest, innovate, and improve on the current aircrafts (Concorde B). The airplane has presented an opportunity to the company where its market is readily available due to its uniqueness, and the demand has increased immensely. However, there are threats facing the company, which is other competitors such as Boeing and Airbus companies. In addition, the company has weaknesses that disadvantage it from its competitors. The major weakness is that of time that prevents the company from properly improving on the Concorde airplane (Kamp, 2003). 3.0 Pre-concept design To maintain the quality and smoothness of flight, the manufacturer plans on the mounting drop slats and the wing tips on the leading edge of the wing. The improvement on the tweaks will help in the reduction of induced drag at supersonic speeds as well as increasing the available lift at slower speeds (Concorde technical specs, 2014). 3.1 Product basics The main components of the Concorde B are the fuselage, wings, and tail, engine, landing, gear, interior, and computer systems. The aerodynamic sharing that is located at the edge of the exhaust is responsible for the noise pollution, which is for improvement. The plane also has an engine that optimizes for supersonic cruise throughout the whole speed range and reduces the consumption of fuel. An additional discharge system will be installed to the plane to help in increasing the margin of airflow through the engine. The purpose of the tail is to propel the airplane (Concorde technical specs, 2014). 3.2 Configuration Selection Process The configuration of the plane allows it to maintain supersonic cruise. The plane configuration is in a way to increase airflow in the engine and reduce noise pollution In addition, the manufacturer plans on accommodating customers from all backgrounds. Considering the fuel consumption of the airplane, it is economic friendly. Due to the competition faced from Airbus and Boeing, the airplane is configured to trade in a wide area to maximize profits (Concorde technical specs, 2014). 3.3 Key Features and Benefits The plane has tweaks that help the plane increase the available lift at slower speeds. Another special feature is wing tips and mountain drop slats that help the plane on maintaining smooth flights. Concorde B has various key features, which include fuselage, wings, engine, landing gear, interior, and computer systems. The computer systems are beneficial into the airplane in that they help in working efficiency and its effectiveness (Concorde technical specs, 2014). 3.4 Design considerations the design of the plane put much consideration on reducing noise pollution to help conserve the environment. Another major consideration on the design of the plane is reducing fuel consumption. The considerations were also aimed at increasing its speed due to the increased distance coverage area (Concorde technical specs, 2014). 3.5 Product Description The product is the only one existing in the market and caters for all the needs of its clients. Apart from being environmental and pocket-friendly, it is also the best investment for the economy and market. The 95,254kg to 99,790kg is the highest capacity of fuel that can be consumed on board. The airplane weighs a maximum of 84,300kg that include Concorde B and Olympus 735 engine (Concorde technical specs, 2014). Conclusion In conclusion, the improved model of Concorde was never achieved. The production of the model could not be achieved due to time. The improvement of the model was made to reduce monopoly in the market as well as reduce fuel consumption and contribute in the growth of the market. According to the recommendations provided, the business was viable hence a good investment. The project would have increased coverage area of travel to satisfy customer needs. In addition, time spent in traveling would have reduced due its supersonic speed and in the same time reducing fuel consumption rate that is good for business (Concorde technical specs, 2014).
